Hi guys and gals  i am hoping for some advice on a project i am working on for fun.
The project is a picture of a hand in flames on a black background like the one shown here
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2636/4174436844_5e3479d423.jpg
the hope is someone can tell me the best way to achieve this, i do understand that these things take practise and that a step by step play is a bit much to ask, but a push in the right direction would be a great help.

thanks for looking
chris

that is great thank you! i tried your first idea but i couldnt find anyone to model for me.
thanks again.

Looks to me like this was shot from below with the hand being plunged into a bowl of liquid with some creative lighting and then serious PS-ing, but then my eye for this kind of creative photography is frankly pooooooooorrrrrrrrrrrr.

Nick.

You are either talking some special effects flame gel that they use for "men on fire scenes" in films or a lot of photoshoping.

As a kid I used make a loose fist, fill my hand up with lighter gas, light it. You could then hold it for 2-4 seconds before it got too hot, when you opened your hand the gas would expand making a fire ball that instantly burnt out.

I wouldn't like to try just setting your hand on fire.

EDIT:

maybe worth a look = http://www.zeller-int.com/categories/fireret/zeljel.htm
