Hi, I have 250GB storgage on my Mac, of that 179.8 GB shows as 'Other'. I spend several hours last night trying to find out how to and if I can reduce the Other and what it was. I found it was files that my Mac can't allocate to photos, movies, apps, etc.

I bought DaisyDisk to see if I could find that it is, without luck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Regards.

As you say, Other represents files that're not catagorised as Audio, Photos, Movies, Apps etc

So could be data/temp files for apps, compressed files, office office documents etc etc

Disk Inventory X is a good app for seeing whats filling up your disks.

Cheers, tried Disk Inventory X but it didn't seem to show all the folders. Largest one was 29GB and the total storage issued by the rest of the files didn't add up to any where near the 250GB drive storage .

That's a better link to explain it, cheers Steve.

I had this problem and found that a lot of it was lightroom. So I went through my LR catalogue and deleted loads of really old folders (ones that were long finished with and the original raws and jpegs are stored on various hard drives). That freed up lots of space :)

I had a big chunk of data in Mobile Sync (think it was called that) - iPhone /iPad backups

I use an app called Omnidisksweeper which does a good job of showing me what's where. It helped me delete around 60Gb of previews from Capture NX2 which were lying around taking up needless space despite having emptied the cache. As mentioned above, don't forget to delete old and unwanted Lightroom backups if you've got them as they can soon take up a lot of space.

Second that - it's a good app for working out what's taking up your GBs !
