anyone had any experience of using a proxy in lion?

having a few issues that apple forums/google isnt really helping with.

first off the "system pref -> network -> ethernet -> proxies" settings would not save, every time you went back in the details were blank again. managed to get this sorted by creating a new network connection and disabling the old.

however now the username and password specified in the proxy settings is not being passed to the web filter.

seems like a common issue but no answers.

I'm using a proxy to watch iplayer etc. in France. I just followed their installation instructions and had no problem. Not being terribly tech-minded i don't know if it's relevant to you but the details are here; http://www.iportal.me/secure/walkthroughmac.pdf

forgot to say I'm using Lion.

I noticed that. I tried to change some network settings, dns I think, and it threw them away. Forget how I sorted it unfortunately. It was something dumb needed like having to logout as me and login as an admin user rather than just authenticate within the panel.

Hmm sounds promising I'll give that a go, I think the user is an admin but I'll try doing it under the true admin account.

Will report back :)

I find that annoying really. It's bad practice to be logged in with admin privileges so I never am. If you can't then authenticate when needed it's just really poor design from apple.

Used to work back in 10.4, but these days I have better luck configuring the proxy within a browser such as Firefox. However thats not much help if you need to route more than HTTP through a proxy.

I don't know what apple did to the network stack in Lion, but it appears that a lot of stuff that is out of the ordinary is bricked, or at least beyond my abilities to fix it.

Sorry, not helping much am I.

tell me about it, we had to hotfix our AFP shares to get lion to connect reliably..

dont know whats happening with this proxy issue by the way, left my colleague with it while im flitting between sites.
