Hi everyone, I run my business mainly on facebook and I wondered if I'm missing a trick with optimization.

Ive tried;

Dipping DPI to 72 and saving as 602 px maximum (length or height)

My images just look horrible :/

Thanks :)

I don't think there's such a thing as optimising for Facebook. :D It always looks horrid.

604 pixels is the max size I think. So I just resize from LR to that, convert to sRGB while I'm at it. I use the sharpen for screen - low setting, because I'm lazy.

You could possibly get slightly better results doing it in PS using bicubic sharper and saving for web use. But on FB I really doubt you'd notice the difference.

Thankyou, I will post the results!

Yeah fb compresses images like poo, they're generally going to look naff unfortunately

How is the quality to you (just recalibrated my monitor too)

so long as they're 720 or under, will that mean there's no compression taking place?

I dont think it works that way...I feel like facebook attemp some sort of optimization of softening/sharpening to even out compressed colours...

I think they just compress it to hell whether it's the right size or not. I find that sometimes they look fine, and other times they look utter crap.

they definitely seem to be showing a larger image just lately & whatever form of compression they use seems to have been a bit kinder to the pics too.
even for a little while before the size increase :)

but then every now & then :shake:

I had the same problem, FB just makes them look horrible! I Think FB has some kind of dirty soft filter they use just to ruin images. :) I link to images in a flickr page now, that shows them in their original quality.

Can't say Ive ever noticed any deteriation on FB myself, I always use the simple uploader, maybe try that if you havn't already.

Facebook used to really ruin pics. Compress it into a small size.

However, they have defo changed the policy. I can upload rather large size pics now. Infact sometimes I even delete the pics I'e uploaded as it looks too big. reduce the size and upload it again. So it has improved.

Actually I've just tried it, and it's no where near as bad as it had been, a tad cooler but that's about it. Maybe they listened to criticism

Maybe.

All for the better and certainly an improvement.

They may have improved colour cast issues, but they still soften everything to crap. People always go, "Wow! They're great! etc", but we all know they look shocking.
