I have been offered this camera from a friend, its in very good condition. I currently only have the 400d so was thinking of upgrading, but would like your opinion on this model.

I mainly shoot landscape and i live in Machynlleth so right in a low flight area so would like a camera that's pretty quick, so this one at 8.5fps is fast.

What do you think?

Still a great Camera, as is the Mark I which i shot with extensively last year :) Still got plenty of MegaPixels, the screen isn't great but it does the job. The only thing is batteries, make sure you get the charger and a few batteries, as a Canon charger alone cost 100 quid!

Also is won't take any EF-S Len's that you have

Thanks for the reply.
The screen is the only let down for me really, but it looks a good camera and has some good reviews online, not many videos about it though.
I have only one EF-S lens which is a kit lens that i don't use really. Comes with the charger but only one battery.

Just to echo what others have said - still a very capable camera with superb autofocus and built like a tank.

There are a few downsides though albeit not deal breakers.

It does have a modest MP count which on a larger 1.3 crop sensor means it's not the best if you want to crop heavily.

The screen isn't great by modern standards - I don't really judge by it and wait till I get home before deleting stuff.

It has the older menu buttons (two handed) which can take a bit of getting used to.

I think it is probably the best value (Canon) camera around these days. Shots with it are lovely and can take quite heavy-handed processing.

You can get good replacement batteries from 7 day shop for very little.

It is certainly a big step up from 400D, well even 30D would be.

8MP is getting a bit low, but if you are careful with framing A3 prints shouldn't be a problem.

Have no problems printing A3 or A2 prints of the shots I've taken with the 1D MKIIn. The 1D MKII a great camera, has a 1.3x crop, so not as extreme as your crop on the 400D. Its more a sport camera, i.e. very fast autofocus system for action photography than a landscape camera, if your mainly interested in landscapes, I personally would recommend 5D (MKI, II or III), more suited to his type of photography.

If you wanted to take mainly shots of the jets whizzing around the Mach Loop then the 1D takes the biscuit.

As also mentioned, the 1D doesn't take the EF-S lenses or 3rd party equivalents. I really like my camera, it does take some getting use to, the controls are completely different to the standard canon, lots of fingers and thumbs, but it does take an impressive image. You are looking at old tech, so 8mp, ISO usable upto 800/1600 but no more, batteries are expensive, but its built like a brick and weather proofed, especially when combined with some of the L series lenses to really complete the seal.

Depends what he's offering the camera for.

Surley stepping up to a better camera is good thing?

Thing is, i want a better camera than what i have now,as i think my 400d is on its way out, the auto-focus is going nutty from time to time.

The mega pixels does seem low, but i thought it wasn't all about megapixels? or is it?

You have to bear with me as im still learning, so forgive me if my questions come across as stupid.

I preferred the 1D mk 2 to my 7D - especially for sport and low light - top camera

+1 from me on the content of this post.

I'm on my second 1DII body and wouldn't part with it. 5D for full frame and landscapes, 1DII for anything with a hint of movement. Just get the owner to put it on maximum warp speed 11 frames a second or whatever it is.

Aftermarket batteries from 7dayshop do the business.

The others are right to point out the dated layout of the controls but, you know, from where you are now you're going to have to step up a gear so why not do it in this direction?

Cracking, absolutely cracking value for money assuming that yor friend's example isn't jiggerred.

Thanks for all your comments much appreciated. He wants 435.00 for it, one battery and charger. I have had a look, its in very good nick and he does look after his kit.

Think i will have to have a think.

See a few of these knocking around and may well be interested myself. Currently use a 5d ii with a 5d i as a backup (which is hardly ever used) but am considering swapping the 5d i for a 1d mkii for the confetti shots, groomsmen running towards me and in low light for focussing. The only thing that looks a little suspect is the iso capability although for the 1st dance etc I'd be using flash so not so much f a problem i guess. What would people recommend?
