Hello,

trying to open Sony RAW (ARW) files in Photoshop CS3, im sure i used to be able to and i have updated to the latest version of Camera RAW but photoshop is not recognising the files.

I have Lightroom and tempted to convert files to DMG to see if that helps.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

It should open DNG ok, but with sony it may depend on which model you have if the ARW files are compatable

From what I can gather, CS3 doesn't support the A550 files, even with the latests updates.

If you import them into Lightroom, provided your version of Lightroom supports the A550 camera, then you could open them from Lightroom into Photoshop. You may get a compatibility error as the latest version of LR hands off the conversion to the ACR engine in Photoshop. Don't worry simply select Lightroom Processes" option when presented with the error message.

If you have CS3 then maybe you also have an earlier version of Lightroom. I have a Panasonic G1 & GF1 which will not open in Lightroom or CS3, so I just convert them to DNG using Adobe Raw converter, v.6.3. However if you try to use this you will probably get error message "Files not recognised". The work around to this is as follows.
  1. Open DNG converter
  2. Open your RAW file
  3. In DNG Preferences, change preferences to camera RAW 4.6 and later

The latest version of Adobe Camera Raw that CS3 will work with is v.4.6, so by changing the preferences it makes software backwards compatible.

Why not just process via LR?..... does the same job and if there's any cloning/brushwork to be done, do that on the outputted TIFF.....

I have cs3 and can open my arw files, have you tried loading on just the Sony arw viewing software that came with the camera? I'm pretty sure that's what I had to do. Hope this helps

With CS3 you cant install a version of Adobe Camera Raw above 4.3. Likewise Lightroom will not recognise RAW files from new cameras in earlier versions such as version 1 and probably version 2.
