I seem to be having a problem opening NEF files in Photoshop CS3 from iPhoto.

I import the RAW NEF files from my CF card off my camera into iPhoto and when I try to open them from iPhoto into Photoshop CS3 I get a message saying -

Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file

It never happened with my D70 using the same kind of import system.

Can anyone offer any help please....

When Adobe bring out a new version of Photoshop they stop supplying updates to earlier versions. Makes life easier for them I suppose. Without going back and double checking I suspect the only version of Photoshop that will read D300s files is CS4.

OK what can you do. Well you can download the FREE DNG converter and convert the NEF files to DNG, which CS3 should then read.

Check that iPhoto can read the DNG files if using iPhoto is a must .

Just checked and it's OK with my Canon converted files

Is that really the best I can do...? :bang:

Adobe will most likely update the raw converter, or may have done already. It may already be on their website.

Thanks for the answer.... Bit of a **** that :(

Looks as if I'm going to have to look a different route isn't it! Presently if I import into iPhoto, open in Lightroom3 Beta they will then open in PS CS3... strange huh!:thumbsdown::bang:

Not really, because LR has an inbuilt raw converter, essentially it is the new raw converter you need.
The problem with LR3 Beta is that when the Beta stage runs out your library will either vanish or not be useable (I can't remember which).

OK, I can understand your following here.

However having downloaded a copy of CS4 to trial, I get the same error code coming up -

Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file

So why is CS4 not reading the NEF files I'm trying to open from iPhoto?? :bang:

You probably now need to go to that other link and update the raw converter.

Download the latest ACR update from the Adobe web site. It will install the latest ACR automatically into CS4.

The reason for the continual need for updates is that with every new camera each manufacturer makes changes to their RAW file data. Adobe then have to reverse engineer them and modify the ACR engine for them.

Would be nice to have one standard!!!!
