I have a couple of trail cams in my garden and reading and saving the files was quite easy in Windows 10. Now I have moved to Windows 11, I'm struggling to read or even open the files.

The files now show up as .AVI and there seems to be nothing on my Windows 11 system that will read them. Apart from whatever came with Windows 11, the only other programme I have on there is VLC Media Player but that doesn't seem to help.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

Surprised that VLC couldn’t open them, but I’ve not used Win 11. Maybe this link will help

Just to clarify........

If you 'right click' on the file and select "Windows Media Player", are you saying it does not play the .avi ?

Likewise, do you have the most current version of VLC installed? In the past I have found VLC very useful.

PS I have W11 on my laptop but don't think I have tried to play .Avi files yet. IIRC .MP4 and .mov do play in Windows Media player

I put the card with the .AVI files on it into my PC, Click on the first file and that opens the VLC player which is full screen. I then need to 'Quit' VLC player to get back to the card with the .AVI files on it. It works but is taking me forever to view the .AVI files.

I just downloaded the latest VLC to make sure it was up to date.

Could you download the files to the pc before opening in VLC? May help.

Thanks Steve, I'm willing to try anything at the minute.

If you have have a Windows Explorer window open (and why not if you are looking at the files on the SD card.)

Then should be no need to close VLC each time to select the next file......
Hit Shift + Tab to 'show' the Win Explorer window and click to bring to the top (so to speak) pick next file as needed.

I have always transferred card files to the PC into their own folder as I see no reason not to!

Thanks again for the help BB.
Sorry to sound dim, but can I ask how you transfer the .AVI files from the card to the PC please? On my PC the .AVI are on a card reader that's plugged into a USB slot.

Sorry to sound dim,
Nothing is ever 'dim' just unfamiliar.......I and many others move files many times so whatever method 'we' use becomes second nature. You just have be settled/comfortable doing it once tried and practiced. :)

As per my post on your other thread about opening two folders

On your case, the source folder is the SD card and target would be your folder of choice on your C drive or other drive that you might have for storing your (data) files

Just tried the trail cameras and your method using VLC works great BB. Thanks again for all the help, really appreciated.

Weirdly the default video player (called 'Media Player') in Windows 11 is not as capable as playing back different formats to the older W10 and W7 media players. However the older media players are still available on Windows 11, if you want to change back to the one used in Windows 10 right click one of the AVI files then click 'Change' beside Opens with. You should now get a list of media players, 'Films & TV' is the W10 media player I believe and 'Windows Media Player' is the W7 media player. If you choose 'Films and TV' then click Ok then when you double click any other AVI files it should open them in the W10 media player rather than W11 media player.

If you want to revert the change, follow the same steps then on the list of video apps choose 'Media Player' (has a circular play icon on a blue background) and click Ok.

If you prefer the W10 player for other video formats then you'll need to do the same steps again since the steps above will only make the change for AVI files, it won't do the same for mp4 files etc.

Might be worth checking the menu on the trail cam, it may offer other formats like MP4.
