As anyone used this free ware software - Open Office. I'm just downloading it, because I don't want to pay of MS office. Open Office is supposed to be compatible with office.

So I'm going to give it a go on a vista machine?

If anyone as used it. Any comments, etc..

Yeah i used it before i got office, is a great piece of software. Used it for collage work too

Cheers Tony.

Did you ever use the db side of the software?

db = database.

Sry using techie acronyms

Don't have a use for DB software myself but I thoroughly recommend OpenOffice, cracking software.

Thanks Steep for the recommendation

I've used the word processing, spreadsheet and presentation parts for years - excellent software.

What are you wanting to do with a database - mysql might be a better option - depends what you are after.

I had a very minor play with the DB, but I don't have any real use for one. The rest of OO is superb and will quite happily work on MS format files and save them as such. I've pointed quite a few people to OO when they have asked me about office software.

Who, I've used sql database years ago, and I know they can be more powerful. I've never used mysql. I'm lazy and like the wizards to start with, until I get more compotent. Does mysql over these wizards for creating reports etc.

jgs001, I had play with he db last night and it looks good, and I load one or 2 other items last night and they look very good :)

I have MS office(2003) and openoffice and for some work I prefer open office.

I needed to write some software with the data source being ms Access which was good to use and I am also going to write some with a data source for open office base.

I have used Access in depth for several projects and I do find it fairly nice to use and to customise - although I preferred a customised interface rather than the Access interface which is why I wrote my own software to display the data.

I haven't used base in depth but it looks good so far.

I do like the fact that open office is compatible with MS office file formats and also, the writer files can be exported to pdf files too which is great for sharing on the internet :)

Although I have found I can get MS Office for £20 through work....

CAn I have a copy please, check is ready post just tell me where

Thanks for the tips. I've used Access quite heavily in the past, but currently I don't have the money to spend on the product. Part of the reason for downloading open office was because of the compatibilty with office. So should I ever require it in the future, the data can be transfered.

The PDf function is useful and will be used in the future.
