Hi guys,

I have just developed a couple of 35mm rolls and the same problem has happened on both.....Only the first three frames on one roll and first five on second roll has been developed. The rest has come out clear. They were done separately, not in the tank at the same time?

Done using same process / dev time etc?

Could this be problem with the dev tank? I am using a very old Patterson System 4 which only holds one roll a time. I loaded a practice roll in daylight and it seems ok?? Not sure though.

If you can see the edge markings, then the camera didn't expose those frames that were clear.

Yes all the edge markings have come out. Strange that it could be the camera as I have never had problems with it before. It was a Canon 50e. Any other possibilities?

H'mm well other than the lens cap was on or mirror not lifting up after the first few frames (you can check that with no film in the camera)...even if the film wind on had failed you would still get multiple exposures on one frame.

As Brian said, if the frame numbers are properly developed then the chemicals did their thing. If you have a small number of properly exposed images then nothing, it sounds like the shutter wasn't opening. If the exposed frames are extremely dark, then it could be the film wind-on (i.e. multiple exposures on the same piece of film). I'd try new batteries as a first step, and if that doesn't help it will likely need repairing.

From post 1, the film was clear, so unexposed. I've not heard of a Canon 50e, so I Googled and it might be a Canon EOS 50e, which, according to a post on the AP forum (turned up on "canon 50e" search term in Google) has/had an unreliable auto-rewind function that rewinds in mid roll for no apparent reason. Is this possiblly the solution?

The only other thing I can think of is that I rewound the film mid-roll to change it. I did used to do that sometimes. Ok I am willing to accept that it could be that or the camera at fault but before I develop another roll can I definitely rule out something wrong with the Patterson tank?

Yes, if the frame numbers and markings look normal along the entire film then your processing is fine, tank included.

Thanks. That was my main concern as it was an old one that I havent used for a while.

If the tank was at fault, I would expect the blank frames to be black (light leak) or patchy (film touching itself)
