I don't know that it is possible, except with use of an application. I use Photo Mechanic. Which, after thinking that Lightroom was perfectly good for what I needed, using its auto ingest feature with the famous Tilebarn plugin, I now love. It much easier to use and just better IMO. Aside from sports events, I now shoot other events, review on camera and lock, then ingest only locked files (including RAW). Then I put these through my usual workflow.
It saves time rather than importing every single pic, it's easy to see what are keepers in events stuff I think so no need to import all.

It is helpful for my own process but I don't take the laptop to matches as my laptop is huge. Our process is at half time, run up to press box, download a few images that I've locked through the match and copy them onto the club's laptop so they can tweet a couple for half time match and full time report.
I found a solution which is to dual write. Delete all that aren't locked off one card and then they can copy just those and I still have the rest on my other card. Worked quite well for Thursday's match
