Morning all,

I know what I like to photograph and all in all I'm happy with my end product, but does anyone more learned than me have a decent link to anything online that might give some hints and tips on composition of an image? Something that might outline any of the basic academically held theories as to what makes a good pic. I've googled but the results are varied and a little muddled.

I'm sure other lovely folk will put up links for uou, I do find looking at plenty of images and studying them helpful plus obviously posting and getting hints, tips and thoughts from here is always a great way to learn or get other view points.

Just keep looking at images and thinking about what it is you like about the ones you like. Print out images you like and draw lines, curves, s-curves, circles, etc. where you see them.

I'd advocate the above too. The rules didn't create great art, it happened the other way round. If your memory is full of great images, you'll feel inspired and you'll use similar patterns in your own work.

But this video is a decent grounding, and he's not a great photographer but he is a great teacher.

Why don't you have a look for some local camera clubs as you can gain a lot of experience there? Plus valuable advice in real situations?

http://compositionstudy.com/ gives some info on composition. Whatever you do don't stick rigidly to the 'rules'. A third can be a quarter, and you can use multpile compositional techniques in one frame, for example. But most of all look at lots of pictures and see how the 'rules' work in them. The aim is to make composition, or framing, intuitive through repeated exposure to good pictures and through practice. Take LOTS of pictures and don't worry if they are crap. Knowing what not to do is as important as knowing what to do, and sometimes doing the wrong thing can be right!
