I need to get some black and white prints done that need to be exhibition quality. I know you have to pay the price when the chips are down, but I was taken aback when I saw the price of 16x12 or A3 at Ilford! Excellent quality colour prints from Sams or DSCL etc. are a fraction of the price!

Can anyone recommend a good quality printer at a reasonable price please?

supply and demand...

..... there's much more colour paper made and a selection of suppliers...

... B&W there's Ilford. The B&W paper is more than twice the cost of colour paper.

Then you need the customised printer that will only print onto mono paper - and you then need enough work to go through it...

.. I know theres a US company that will remachine an old Frontier, and Durst make a B&W version of their lab - but both would need a good amount of work to justify...

I've found that for the majority of people a well run colour printer thats kept on aim will do a very good B&W.

Some of the inkjet printers, particulary the 11 and 12 colour canon and epson do very very good mono output. I did run a special set of inks for very high quality mono work - the demand just wasn't there....
