Hi All...

I'm looking at creating myself a website. I have had this domain www.dan-taylor.co.uk for years now and never really got around to using it.

So I was hoping at having two sections to the website. A "personal" section and a "Photography" section.

The Personal bit will be about me and my online gaming, just boring stuff. And the "Photography" section will store all my chosen photos...

Do you guys use a Content Management System or some sort of PHP Gallery system to maitnain your files on the net etc?

If so, can you suggest any?

Many thanks!

I use gallery2, though I don't have much in it at the moment.

I also like the look of SimpleViewer, which is flash based.

They serve slighty different purposes though.

I use Pixelpost, it's a php application specifically for photo stuff.

Personally, I would ovoid anything Flash based. I know some like it but you really can't beat good old html.

Gallery 1 (as opposed to the newer 2) for me - self hosted on a server in my loft.

I see you've gone for the simpleviewer flash do-dad which is quite popular but as soon as I see a site's using it I just close the window as I'm not a fan of flash. Don't go changing it just for me though

Any reason you really dislike flash unclerichy? Becasue i've always thought simpleviewer is a great tool for displaying a few photos in a basic gallery...

I think it's that navigation within the site suffers as the fore/back hotkeys don't work and I can't middle-click on an image to view it in a separate window. Also, as soon as I see a progress bar being drawn I think 'sod it - flash' and close the site be it a gallery or anything else.

Bring back MS-DOS I say!

Don't worry mate.. I do exactly the same. I can see the use of it for cartoons and games or such like but not for general websites..

Give me good old standards compliant CSS and HTML.

Flash

:)

Using flash for galleries does at least prevent most methods of pinching images, unwanted linking and is scalable.

Thanks all. I started redoing my site last night then got a call out!
So now it's in pieces haha.

I'll continue with it tonight (as long as I don't get called out again).

Thanks for the comments on Flash. At the moment, I really don't have enough photos to set up a "proper" gallery and I have every confidence that this flash gallery will do what I need.

I've added a bit to the flash gallery (which you won't be able to see) that says "Open Picture In New Window" which will open it full size.

Thanks again!

That just means the site has been badly designed then. Flash is best when embedded inside a normal HTML based page. Flash has done so much for the web and its a fantastic tool for galleries. Using a Flash gallery can add an extra layer of protection from people right clicking and saving your images too.
