I have just completed an online order with a large well known company.

I completed my credit card details and just as I clicked on the "make payment" button I noticed that I had got one letter of my surname wrong.

I expected the payment to be rejected, but it went through. I have to admit to being surprised that the bank's automated checking process did not pick up the error.

Anyone had experience of that sort of thing ?

An interesting point......but just maybe.....with the billing & delivery addresses being the same it would be seen as 'secure'?

I never thought of that. Billing and delivery addresses were the same.

By way of a PS.

A lot of online forms prepopulate the payment section page. My CC has middle initial but I rarely use it in regard to the supplier order details, so there have been occasions when I forget to correct and add it on the payment page.....the transaction still completes!

Maybe they apply some 'fuzzy' logic to the name checking, assuming they do any?

The same happened to me a few years ago.
I assumed that the name on the card and the address needed to match but with a spelling mistake with my surname, the order still went through.

names aren’t checked for credit card transaction, just house number and postcode of billing address.

(account names are checked now as part of a bank transfer, although you can override this check)

That is the explanation.
Thank you very much.

Yesterday I started a payment but put the wrong sort code in, the bank said they couldn’t confirm the details but I could still make the payment if I wished but it might go to the wrong person! Because they had already told me they were doing maintenance and there might be problems I nearly clicked OK. Fortunately, checked and found my error!

I seem to recall that it's the house number and the numeric part of the postcode only... So 1 Acacia Gardens, GU21 3BH is the same "check" as 1 Tam O'Shanter Close AB21 3XY
