was looking at getting a time machine or external hard drive

but seen a option for online backup for 5 pc or macs 5tb for £11 a month

i have alot of work on my mac at work and pc so i want something that i can never loose

is this best option

or best buying a spare external hard drive

i like the option for accessing files online too

I use online backups as my off site backup solution. It works well, but the initial backup was painful. Nows it works really well. But you do need a fast connection to make it worthwhile

This.

I'm guessing it's livedrive you've seen. With all online backups, try before you buy - backup speeds vary enormously depending on where the backup server is - and google customer experiences.

I ended up going with backupsolutions (I centralise all my backups to 1 machine so fit in the 1 machine idea they use). Unlimited backups plus I can get at backups I made some time ago (looking today I can get access to backups made mid May...).

I use livedrive. It works well though the software can be a little flaky with a NAS. One thing to watch out for with them. I've noticed alot of places offering it for free. Generally these offers use the software, but not livedrive's servers and store data elsewhere. Livedrive won't offer support in that case

I've been using carbonite for the last few years. Came into its own last year when my main drive blew up.

Just redownloaded the entire drive from carbonite onto a new drive and carried on as if nothing happened.
