One year... three deserts

I've set myself a challenge - visit three deserts in the space of one year. The first 2 are quite easily attainable: a holiday to Morocco at the end of November will tick off the Sahara (although I'd love to do Algeria too...), and my once-every-two-years trip to South Africa and Namibia to visit family in March next year will tick off the Kalahari.

So that leaves one more... and it's a lot tougher that the previous two... Mongolia and the Gobi Desert which I will need to do in September 2009. It will be the big one, but I think I can do it with the experience of the previous two under my belt. I've got a few options open to me, but probably an organised overland tour will be the best way to go. The Gobi will be really challenging, but it's my dream to see at least some of it...

It's also my challenge to bring back the most awesome photos from the deserts, and who knows, perhaps enough quality material to warrant a gallery or exhibition of some sort...

In the meantime, I've built a website to track my progress and log the trials and tribulations of my travels. Feel free to keep checking, but I'll probably add updates to this thread anyway. Wish me luck!

Oh, any comments on the website or advice for my challenge will be most welcome :)

Well, you could cheat and call the Namib one of your 3 - that way you wouldn't have to schlep all the way to Mongolia.

Mate- I'm ebvious of your plans. I've been to the Sahara, the Namib, Patagonia and some other baby deserts - but the trip to Mongolia/Gobi sounds awesome.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. You're absolutely right - the Namib is right next door to the Kalahari, so I'll definitely include it on my route. Actually on my way up to Namibia I'll also be travelling through the Karoo in South Africa which is considered a semi-desert. Once in Namibia, though I'll also visit the Fish River Canyon, which I've always wanted to see.

Patagonia hasn't been on my radar, though I'm thinking that Bolivia/Peru would be a great place to check out one day. When were you there and for how long? What was it like?

I'm booking my trip to Morocco this week to leave on 26 November! Woohoo!

Well, trip to Morocco is now finally booked - arrive in Marrakesch on 27 November and I'm hiring a car to drive to the north (Rabat, Tangiers, Fes) for a few days, then it's back south again to the desert and an overnight camel trip over the dunes, sleeping in tents on the sand, sunrise and then back to Marrakesch, returning a week later.

I can't wait and I'm going to come back with maxed out memory cards and plenty of used rolls of Velvia 50 ;)
 
Blimey, Mike...............what a trip. You lucky old thing.. well if you can't do it now, when will you.

Go for it and have a wonderful time and get all those pics for us :thumbs:

Having just got back from travelling around South America, I can honestly say, that if you enjoy experiencing breathtaking landscapes, you really must go and see Bolivia. We spent just over a month there, and I swear I have now seen most of the landscapes the world has to offer!

If deserts are your thing, which they seem to be, you could always head down to Chile and experience the Atacama after finishing the Uyuni Salt Flats...

Bolivia is nowhere near as scary or dangerous as most people would have you think, and it is also gloriously inexpensive!
