Yes
So I'm finally getting my hands on some flashes (2 X Bowens Gemini 500r) the kit comes with one softbox and one umbrella.

I know plenty about lighting products in a studio (using works many heads and reflectors), but not so much when it comes to lighting people, which is what this kit is destined for. So for fairly simple 2 light ( 3 if you include my 580EXii) family/portrait work, is having only one softbox a major disadvantage?

We sell all configurations - 2 umbrellas, 1 softbox 1 umbrella, 2 softboxes - because different people have different needs and different ideas on how things should be done, but my personal recommendation for most portrait work is indeed 1 softbox and 1 umbrella, it's far more versatile than 2 softboxes, and makes it easier to produce creative results.

Having said that, there is no such thing as a configuration that suits every purpose.
