I want something wide-ish, small and fast to stick on the end of my 30D to take to Hong Kong in 2 weeks' time.

I want to be able to use it on a 5D in the future...what are my choices for around £300?

I am contemplating the 28mm f/1.8, but it is an old design (1995), the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 looks good but it doesn't work on FF, I can't afford £1k for a 24mm f/1.4. Anything else i've missed and what would you get?

I don't really want to take my 16-35mm with me, worth too much and too big to lug around literally every minute of the day.

I am not attempting to be humorous nor sarcastic.

A top-line P&S is a great choice for someone who doesn't want to lug the weigt of a DSLR.

Regarding your desire for a sub 300 pound lens that would also be used on a FF camera. That is to me a nonsensical thought.

You are willing to pay the extra money and lug the extra weight of a full frame camera but, you don't want to pay enough money to get the best imagery from that combination.

I would bet that a 1.6x camera teamed up with a top-line 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens would provide better imagery than a full framer with a dirt cheap lens.

Sigma 20 1.8 £290 Warehouse Express. Nice lens even on a 5D

Buy one there if you find out what your looking for.lol

I have been to Hong Kong a number of times and have diligently tried to buy camera kit. I am yet to buy locally very much cheaper than you get here.

This website: http://www.ygdragon.net/index.php?page=photo/cameraprice.htm gives some guidance on prices - there is no guarantee that non locals will get the price. Check that you actually get what you think that you are going to get - also that items normally in the box new are not added to the bill as extras. There are are also quite alot of seconds around.

We love Hong Kong, so many photo opps - if I had to take one lens, it would probably be my 17-50 2.8 but I would want the 18-135 for a bit more length - the wide angle would be great for the top of the peak. That said, I have used my macro there more than I would have thought

if you have the 16-35, take it !!
Its not THAT heavy, and what's the point in having one of the best lenses for this if you dont use it when you have the chance to go to Hong Kong???

Canon 17-85IS.
I know its an EF-s but its alright as a walk about.
What about the Tamron 17-50f2.8?

I have a "man bag" that i put normal stuff in, I am not taking my camera bag. The reason i don't want a big lens (16-35) is because of 2 things, the weight and its length and a small worry that its an expensive lens !

I am not going to take the grip for my 30D with me, basically want to make the camera as small as possible, just a SLR with a small lens, descrete. Hence the idea of a small wide angle on the 30D. I went back last year with a Canon S70, took most of the photos on the 24mm focal length and although they were ok, i think i could do with the 30D.

I don't want to get an EF-S lens either since i don#t want to spend money on a lens that i don't plan on using when i get a 5D.

Sigma 17-35 2.8-4 EX DG would be my answer for you. I have the 17-40L but in terms of IQ, just as good by only cost me £200 and dont mind it being lost, dropped and broken.

Why don't you pick up a used G9 on the bay or cheaply for new here, use it for hong kong then sell it when you get back for (around) what you paid for it? Its more discrete, smaller, lighter and covers the equivelent of 22-130 on your 30D. If anything happens to it you'll still have both DSLR bodies when you get back :)

Splash out the extra £100-£150 and get a 17-40L ;)
