hey at the moment i have a jessops 360afds flashgun and have tried to get it off camera, originally it was some yongnuo wireless triggers but then i realised that i only use one light at it doesnt move outside the vacinity of 10m (much less than that but i like to round up) and so is it just better to get a long pc sync cord instead?

what are the advantages and disadvantages going with this setup?

Wireless triggers = more cost. Very slight unreliability (but unnnoticable most of the time)

Why not just use the built in optical slave of the 360AF?

I don't think you can use the optical slave with the pop-up flash as it will fire off the pre-flash and be out of sync. Unless you can set the Sony's flash to full manual, which disables the pre-flash - not familiar with Sony but you can't do that with Canon pop-up flashes.

If you use a cord, you will retain full auto-TTL exposure control so that's a major plus. The alternative is radio triggers but they will be full manual only. If the 360AF has a normal built in slave, you could also fire it off an IR trigger like this one from Elinchrom. You can get the same thing off ebay for half the price, not to mention other similar IR tiggers around http://www.theflashcentre.com/prolinca-infra-red-trigger-i1.html

ive tried optical and i had horrible experiences with the pop up flash triggering and doing the ridicolous pre flashes which meant the camera and flash were out of sync. i did buy a ttl cord of ebay and it was meant to be 1.8m long but it was coiled and so really its safest strech was 60cm

Flash in the Pan does long TTL cables.

I've not had a problem using optical flashes with Nikons on the lowest power on manual mode, isn't this possible on Sonys?

Unfortunately they only come in Nikon and Canon flavours :(

There are optical slaves available that ignore the ttl pre-flash, however I'm not sure if they are available in a Sony/Minolta fit.

Be very careful buying the cheapo sync cables off ebay - I bought one for my D300 + SB800 and the thing decided to weld itself to the hotshoe on my D300. I ended having to quite literally hack saw the top off of it (the screws to open up the sync cord connector were on the *underside*!) just to remove it from the camera.

i did notice the lastolite uncoiled ttl cables at jacobs digital and they look the part but im not sure whether it will be limiting as its only 3m.

i was thinking of getting two of these and then a 10m sync cable from jacobs.

its the same company i bought the coiled ttl cable from and they were quick delivery and brilliant build quality.
