Following on from Dod's post about giving a freebie to a magazine I figured I'd post about my latest steps along that path.

Back in December I did a shoot for a local band, it was a freebie but has led to paid promo work with the band and some useful contacts. The gig was at the local arts centre and I spoke to the manager there today about offering my services on a voluntary basis. He'd seen the shots I done for the band and jumped at the chance of having a "semi-pro" available for their various events, shows, etc.

The first thing I'm covering is their panto which is in rehearsal at the moment and I'm going along on Tuesday to discuss some ideas with them and iron out details with the manager.

My basic plan is to provide the arts centre with free shots for their website, flyers, press, etc. and to have prints available for cast members, etc. at cost + a little extra to cover my expenses. Hopefully the gains for me will be lots of experience and to build up a reputation in the local community so my name is mentioned when photographic services are needed.

So am I mad or not? Thoughts please...

I'd jump at the chance - a solid way to build contacts and get a name in the community

I don't think you're being a mug. There's a chicken and egg situation isn't there? - you'd like to charge pro fees, but how do you get the initial experience to justify those charges without dipping your toes in the water a few times? It sounds like invaluable experience to me.

I think that you are doing exactly the correct thing. Just be mindful of stepping back if you need to go more commercial.

It is a win win situation as you can refine your skills at the benefit of others who may assume that you are already there so to speak.

Remember that perception is eveything. If you look the part you can act the part.

Pete.

go for it :)

Yup, good idea.

Thanks for the encouragement folks. I've been mulling this over since the band shoot last month and I finally decided to get off my backside and do something about it
