Has anyone been suckered into buying ON1 RAW 2017, and had success using it; I was and ON1 were forever apologizing for errors. I still go back to it but it still plays up, and I use a PC built for photography. My gripe is that they have brought out a 2018 (beta) version claiming that it's the best thing since sliced bread, same as they did with the 2017 version. To me it's one big con to get some more cash injected from yet more mugs. Sorry if I sound bitter, I am.

Don't be sorry, you're right to be bitter!

Though on Mac and never experienced any kind
of problem with it, I realized quickly that this soft-
ware is not for photographers but for imagers…
there is a nuance there.

I paid for it and it ended up in the trash.

I use it - most important thing for me was setting it up to use hardware graphics acceleration, since before that it was buggy & unreliable. I find the browse module a bit quicker than LR, and also use effects and layers. The print output is also more flexible than LR, allowing creation of borders etc for canvas prints or other purposes. The latest version is intended to be a direct replacement for lightroom, with proper non-destructive editing, though I haven't tried it.

The whole programme seems to centre around presets and I find them to be mostly overdone. I haven't bought it but after their recent half price offer I seriously wanted to like it and so downloaded the trial. I had one bit of success with a difficult image but after that it was an exercise in frustration. I find the development options limited and don' like the interface, I also couldn't make it talk to Photoshop. I still want to like it, maybe it will be ready by about 2020, but it's all a bit of a mess at the moment and, as Kodiak says it's for imagers.

:agree:

… and this is certainly no good way to learn cooking tastefully!

Well, I use it and (almost) like it - its faster than lightroom and has more scope, but you need to treat it more like photoshop than lightroom to get most out of the masks.

I use it primarily because of the odd way that adobe treat fuji raw, but were I still on Nikon I'd probably be using lightroom still.

The main draw for me is that they have to prove themselves, so at least for the moment they're listening to their customer base and producing new features, rather than stagnating as Adobe are - honestly when did lightroom do anything except bug fix and add newer camera support since they introduces haze? (other than mobile which I couldn't give a hoot about)

Edit: this says it all for lightrom cc progress (link), one thing in 2017 - HDR for mobile :tumbleweed:

The thing about the presets is that they should be a starting point. It's sometimes helpful to whip through a few different types just to see, but never to rely on someone else's settings - took me a little while to figure that out. I've put together a few of my own that are rather different from most of what's available to provide subtle enhancement more than pushing to extremes.

Also worth remembering that one can select a single effect and just apply that without making any further adjustments.

I totally agree as presets being a starting point, in fact in most of the On1 videos I've seen where they use one they either say that themselves or change it, often dialing them back

On a side note I did a blind processing test between Lightroom and RAW and RAW just came out on top.

I've just been through and sorted 1050 photos using browse, and I'm sure it was quicker than Lightroom, even with its odd little bits of behaviour. All the star ratings carried across, but not the delete marker (I should have deleted those in Browse, but forgot). I also just installed DXO Optics Pro 11, since it was available as a freebie. :)
