Hi Dave, I've also got my eye on one of these! May I ask where you got it from? Still looking for a good price but they all seem to be much of a muchness.

I'm also interested in editing app suggestions.

No it doesn't have gps. You needed to buy the 4G model for that

4G doesnt work in UK yet does it

It's 3G compatible as well of course...

No also when 4g is available it will be on a different band to what apple have the ipad set to so you won't get 4g.

No none knows what form of 4g the uk will use as yet.

They might well end up using 4g LTE in the uk...

But why buy 4G only to actually be able to get 3G?

Because you won't have mobile connectivity without it. To some (like me) thats quite important.

And as I say, if they bring out 4g LTE over here you'll be able to take advantage of it. The iPhone 5 is rumoured to be 4g LTE so I wouldnt be surprised if this is the preferred 4g setup.

The only reason Apple had to stop advertising it as such is simply because 4g isn't up and running in the UK yet, but when it does, and if it's in LTE form you'll be able to start using it straight away.

Tbh 3G is pretty instant on the iPad 3 anyway!

to late got the wifi version what ae my options

Take it back and swap it for the 3/4g 16gb version. You don't need all that memory when you can store up to 1tb with cloud storage!

Jim has a point, but id go for the 32 gb 4g .some of the newer apps that use the retina like display take up more space. i had quite a few big games on my 64gb and other stuff and used more than half the space so 32 to be safe

The iPad will never work on the UK 4G networks, it is known what frequencies 4G will be using (and the iPad doesn't support either (it has the American 700MHz and 2100MHz only).

OFCOM announced the frequencies up for auction some time ago.

The auction will be for two spectrum bands – 800 MHz and 2.6 GHz.

Best photo app by far is snapseed by Nik

Great bit of editing software, so easy and decent results

This is true and this is because the UK as usual is behind the times. At the moment, in the UK the trials are being rolled out on the old analogue TV spectrum, which pulls in at 800MHz, and the 2.6GHz band that’s already been vacated for 4G, but this is also affecting Nokia and HTC with global roll outs as their 4g products will also use the same bandwidth as the iPad 3.

We may be shafted in the uk as a whole with 4g products while the rest of the world enjoys them.

BUT - Apple’s pushing HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA as well as LTE with the ipad 3. In the UK Three is rolling out the HSPA+ update to the 3G specification. What that means is you’ll get theoretical data speeds of up to 21Mbps on HSPA+ and 42Mbps on DC-HSDPA (which essentially connects to two 3G towers at once for double the data rate).

Anyway, the 4g LTE connectivity doesn't cost anything extra on top of the 3G connectivity on the ipad 3 so it's not as if we have to pay extra for the feature.

Is it better than iPhoto?

It's more of a Euro v US thing, a number of other European countries (eg Germany) are allocating 800MHz and 2.6GHz for 4G so it might end up as the Euro standard. Australia and a lot of SE Asia is allocating 1800MHz, the Yanks might end up all alone on 700MHz.

You can buy Bluetooth GPS and connect the two. Personally, I'd swap it for the '4G' model, buy the camera connection kit, jailbreak it. You can use iFile to save stuff to SD cards. Far, far cheaper too.

If you bought online and it was delivered less than 7 days ago you can return it no questions asked under the "Distance selling regulations"

I believe Apple has dropped the 4G terminology now in the UK, it is called "Wi Fi + Cellular" iPad now.

Thanks very much everyone for your comments and help :)

Cant I just get a pay as you go 3G dongle or something, or do they have slots for SIM cards, as I dont want to mess about sending it back, I would seem ungrateful as my wife bought it for me

It uses micro sims. You can get iPad pay go sims but of course you need mobile connectivity. You can't use a dongle as your iPad won't have the equipment inside (think 'modem') to utilise it. That and I'm pretty sure no USB dongle would be compatible with iPad anyway.

Just take it back and swap it for a 3G/4G enabled version. And like I said, offset the extra money by getting the 16gb version and using cloud storage.

Having an iPad 1 from the week it was released I have slowly evolved with how I use the device. For photography you have to realise stuff like RAW processing ain't going to happen and if you try with certain packages it is simply painful.

The key use for me is its ability as a reviewing device and checking composition, sharpness etc. Snapseed (and probably iphoto) are also good for simple editing of Jpegs. I haven't used the photoshop app, but again don't expect miracles. Another recommended app is the Guardian eyewitness which has a featured shot of the day that I find quite a good app.

It can be a very useful tool and that is how I view it now that the novelty factor has worn off :)

Processing (even raw) on the ipad 3 is a LOT quicker than the iPad 1. It's a fair bit more powerful and with twice as much system ram.

Processing is still easier with a desktop and mouse though!

No doubt iPad 3 is a lot quicker! What program are you using? I take the view of shooting in both Jpeg and RAW, usually I can wait till I am home to process RAW and find it a little pointless to want to process on the fly (admittedly I shoot with a Fuji which produces excellent Jpegs).

The other annoyance I have found is that my iPad seems to have slowed down over time!!!! The new screen is nice, but I don't really need it. I swear Apple have deliberately made it slower to force me to upgrade

I use PiRAWhna and iPhoto mainly, both very good!

The iPad 1 is still great, my OH inherited mine when I bought the iPad 3 and it's still going strong!
