Wow,

Never thought I would get there but today placed an order for a new 5D mk2 :love::love::love:thanks to your advice and a little bit of help from Dad. It should be here Monday ready for end of first set of exams and a week in Norfolk, next week.

It will be quite a jump coming from a 400D, but can't wait to give it a go.

Thanks again for all your help and views

Bridie

(Age 15)

Incredibly jealous!! Wish I was fortunate enough to get such a good camera when i was 15! Now I'm 25 and still debating when to part with my hard earned cash for a 5DII! I know it will happen soon........I don't think I can control myself for much longer ;)

I'm sure you will love your camera and it should last you a long time! Did you purchase a lens with it, if so, which one?

The 5DII kit lens is a 24-105L so perhaps she got that one with it.

Nice one! Hope it serves you well :) I'm the same age as you but still have at least 10 years until I can afford such a beast!

I went from a 400D to a 5dII as well.
You are going to love it.

After a couple of days, the 400D will feel like a toy (If you ever use it again)

Just an extra thought, Woollyback's profile states they are 44 years old...

Parents Account ?

Either way..

Congrats... im jealous as i would love a 5d... but am barely good enough to use the 350d i have haha.

Great stuff, you lucky blighter!

One thing to remember though is let the battery trickle chare for at least three times the normal charge time to maximise the battery, in the excitement this is easy to forget and not get as many shots per charge that you could do....

Enjoy and I, like may here I am sure, look forward to seeing the pics.

Mam bought me a 17-40L because I wanted to go wide angle - hope that's the right choice cos i will be washing up for ever!!!

Please can you explain this to me - does this mean 3X the wait to take a pic???

Bridie

Yes! Lets say you camera battery takes two hours to charge.. you should leave it in the charger and on for 6-10 hours for the first three charges.. You could take it off sooner, though you may find the life between charges not so great, it forces the memory within the battery to it's maximum..

Mobile phones and anything else with LithiumIon batteries should also be treated this way... I didn't do it once and had to replace a battery at £65.00.. taught me a lesson, so I pass on the info when I think I should...

Should've got a Nikon D700! I could have had a go then! :D

Seriously, congratulations! :)

Hi Bridie,

It does mean you'll have to wait a bit longer before you can get out and mess about with it. Take the time to sit down and read the manual properly while they're charging... At least you can familiarise yourself with the camera then. :)

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it.
Best wishes,
Si

I wasn't aware of that. The only way I could possibly manage this would be overnight! The temptation to play would kill me. Even then I wouldn't be able to sleep - I think I'd have to keep staring lovingly at the Camera!

Enjoy Birdie, be sure to share your shots!

I keep thinking about buying one. I've just turned 30 (). Belated gift to myself perhaps!?

Lithium Batteries don't have a memory like old Nicad batteries do, I've never followed a rule that says charge for 3 x it's charge time before using. Never had a rubbish battery life either.

Maybe it's something new ?

400D to 5D2 your in for a real surprise. I went 40D 5d2 and boy what a jump.

Lithium Ion Batteries do NOT suffer from the memory effect, however if you plan on storing the batteries for any length of time do so at 50% charge and cycle them at least once a month to ensure maximum battery life.

Also you can buy batteries from 7DayShop for around £6. I bought two for my 40D and they out perform my original Canon battery. I got both for £12 including shipping.

Slightly complicated with the 5D Mk II in that the third party batteries still aren't fully compatible (don't display charge levels etc). On the other hand, I shoot a whole wedding on a single battery which still has charge left at the end (I do carry a spare btw!) so it's not like multiple batteries are an essential for most situations.

Ah, I recently moved from my good old trusted 20D to a 5Dmk2 myself. It's definitely an amazing camera when paired with a good (L) lens. Although, I think I liked the sturdyness of the 20D body better, but hey.

In any case, enjoy it and make the most of it! :)

Thanks everyone - I will keep you posted. Just need some nice windmills in Norfolk next week

Your work and maturity is super for one so young. Best of luck with your new camera - make the most of the opportunity you have :)

Well it arrived today and just took a shot of my dog Kizzy. All settings as it came out of box except at iso 6400, with 50mm f1.8 - I'm amazed.

Thanks again for all your help - off now to read manual and twiddle some buttons:love::love:

enjoy! It's a fab camera and I bet you can't believe how much better the 5D II is at high ISO than the 400D!

I wish I had such a camera at 15
