Yes
I’ve just received my brand new OM3 from WEX on checking the camera I done a shutter count and out of the box it has had 850 mechanical shutters fired! This can’t be right can it?

No, you might expect a few possibly from new but that's 'used/demo' quantity.
If you are certain it is correct I would return it.

I accessed the hidden menu following instruction from Olympus experts on YouTube and it gets to a page with a list of counters, first one being MS mechanical shutter it was 850, I was quite shocked so went back and took a mechanical shot and the number went up to 851 so I guess I’ve done it right. Anyway I’m in conversation with WEX who can’t explain it either. They’ve offered me a chat with their Om rep!

I'd be wanting the offer of a complete replacement or refund - hopefully the OM rep will contact you with such a resolution within 24 hours.

Did you ask WEX about returning if ? They are normally pretty good.
I have returned a few 2nd hand items under their 45 day return policy and asked if new cameras had the same policy when I bought a new one from them recently.
Which they said it did

I’m in contact with them and I sent them a screenshot of the shutter count, although at first they suggested it couldn’t be done! Anyway I’ve gotta wait till tomorrow now when I expect the situation to be resolved. Shame really it’s a beautiful camera.

I’m not too happy with Wex atm
Good a good quote for selling a Sigma 10-20 HSM…….then they reduced it quoting an optics mark. Bull - l got it back
In your case I’d return for a full refund and shop elsewhere ❗

I read a thread about the OM3 on DPReview where upon receipt the shutter count was similar to yours.

I have looked but cannot find it :(

Might be a factory test count .. but who knows .. as for Wex I’m not happy either bought a used camera sat evening and a spare battery for it Sunday go5 the battery this morning but camera still not dispatched,be on the phone first thing tomorrow

I just spoke to Om system rep via WEX a guy called David Smith and he told me this is what they do with every new camera they hold shutter down for a period of time to test, anything from 300-1000 shutters will be fired. Why not just reset it after?

I would guess because if they can, anyone clever enough to figure it out could "clock" it on resale.

Gives me an uneasy feeling. Never heard it before or experienced it, maybe a change after becoming OM Systems.
Would be interesting to return it and get another and see what that shows!

I read this and thought it was pure bishop.
So I checked the brand new OM-1 MkII I picked up from Clifton Cameras yesterday, and which I have yet to even set up.
MS shows 664 actuations.....
So I'm surprised but not disturbed by this ;)

I've noticed for many years that all my new Olympus cameras had straight out of the box many hundreds of shutter counts showing. It was a bit disconcerting at first, but it seems Olympus / OMS have been doing this for years.
