Back in May 2001 Olympus began to make noises about a professional five megapixel Four Thirds format digital SLR, two years after that in June 2003 they revealed the E-1. After much hinting, several 'accidental' leaks and some four and a half years, Olympus has today announced the ten megapixel E-3 professional digital SLR. We had been promised an E-3 before embargo to enable us to produce a preview but that for reasons best known to Olympus this fell through so all we can provide you with is a press release, specs and a couple of images. Body only price will be £1099 in the UK.

Looks like a very nice camera and something that should be considered,... rather than laughed at ;) Though I agree, it has been while since a pro body update.

Looks like a very nice system at a good price all in all but here is one question:

Would all/any Olympus operators please let me know how the cameras handle high ISO noise?

I'm just thinking that such a lot of Mp on a rather small sensor (2x FOV crop) should be a bit of a challenge or Olympus peeps are doing something seriously right?

:shrug::thumbs:

Anton Roland, there are a few photos here that might give you a hint here:

and here's a bit too:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E410/E410A.HTM (probably the same sensor)

The performance is decent, imo.

The new lenses that were announced as well look very nice indeed and have a look at the E-3 all wet:

The photo is from a preview and the previewer writes that it's a really speedy camera, he said the AF is lighting fast. I'd love to try that out, as I'm inclined to believe it. Otherwise, it seems to be what E-1 was and has a few more things too, like IS and faster and probably more accurate AF.
I can't wait for reviews, I'd love to read how performs in real life.

Looks like your next camera has just been announced MusicMan!

Oly all the way :woot:
She's a beauty Dave, I've been watching this announcement for several weeks now and was tuned in on the E-3 launch day last week.

I saw the video Slapo posted last week as well but I don't give much for the commentators ability!

I already have two of the prosumer level lenses so I'd be looking for a body only - gotta have one tho!! :)

that looks well :)

Love to see some shots from it

Thanks!

To say that I'm impressed would be an understatement!

As you're moving into the Pro field (quickly I may add!) I think so too

So when you have, we'll expect a full report here
Hi Dave - I wouldn't think that a few simple portrait sessions and a possible wedding (if they ever sort their date out) constitutes calling myself a 'pro' by any stretch of the imagination... :)

However, I am taking a look at the E-3, who knows what Santa might bring me this year eh :) I'd only need the body too as I have two good prosumer lenses already - with the possibility of a third maybe sometime soon too.

I guess to make the decision to purchase a camera at that price (body only looks to be £1099) I really do need to ascertain if there's money in it for me and if I have the ability to reduce my current business commitments and increase the photography side. OK, shooting fairly straightforward portrait and family shots is one thing, but becoming good enough, sufficient, and generating the greater part of ones income from it is another. Ability, critical mass, opportunity et al... all have to be considered and evaluated first.

I will though, post any feedback on the E-3 if I manage to have a dabble on one.

C'mon john, dont kid yourself :D

You know you're gonna have one, just like me (mine in on pre-order and deposit paid at park camera's, and has been for around a month or so)

As for the lenses, i think the 11-22, 14-54, and 50-200 will more than do the camera justice considering the way they behave on the e-510.

Well... I'm a very happy bunny.

It seems the good lady current wife is desperately in need of a 3rd King Charles Cavalier puppy - on top of the two we have already (and Belle of course). So, some clever questioning and it looks as though a deal may have been struck when I suggested to her today that... "so, it's OK to just want another puppy because you simply want one then yeah...?", she said... "yes, of course, why wouldn't it be...", I replied... "no reason, of course it's perfectly fine to have another puppy, even though you have two perfectly good ones already, just because you want one dear..." :):)

She realised what I was getting at... quid pro quo et al...

Done deal then eh! ;):clap::thumbs:

Weak or not it's got me my E-3 :):)

Well... that's after a car for Lloyd, and an E-510/E-410 plus Macbook for Heather... eeeek!!

No, I will keep the E-510 as a 2nd body, and sell the E-400. I was looking for en E-410 for Heather for Christmas, but now that Olympus are doing £100 cashback on the E-510 it might be just as well for me to get her one of those.

Haven't ordered the E-3 yet, but have made approaches ;) - do need to get a few other expensive items sorted first though. I doubt I'll be the first on here to get one... not quite!

:eek::eek::eek:

You shouldn't be doing this to a camera...

:thinking: Oh O.K. maybe a Nikon, but still!?:rules:

:lol:
