I'm looking at getting a decent flash for my 400D. Looking on ebay I noticed a few 420EX's and 550EX's.
I'm still just learning and trying to build up my gear without breaking the bank.
Are these flashes decent value as opposed to the new stuff?
Cheers

Ian

I can't speak about the 420EX but I use a couple of 550EX's and don't feel the need to replace them.

I agree with Bob I use a pair of 550ex's and don't plan on changing them, the 420ex is the previous version of the 430ex

no problem with the 550ex

Thanks for the replies. That will save me a bit of cash for a decent tripod, bag/box and a super wide angle lens. What kind of price should I be looking at for a used 550EX? They are around the 100-120 pounds on ebay.
Cheers

Ian.

That sounds about right for Ebay but I'm happy to pay a little more from someone on here or another forum......£150'ish for one in good condition.

Thats a fair comment Bob, they don't come up for sale that often though. Are we not getting close to 430EX money at 150 pounds.(which is best by the way? )
I do do a bit of research on ebay and look at what the seller has bought/sold recently and if I find a few camera bits then I'm reassured.

Actually, speaking of the 430ex (not the mark II) anyone have good reviews of this?

I just bought a second hand 430ex from a private sale for £60, bargin?

I use both a 550EX and a 420EX and I don't feel any need for changing. Sure the newer models have some added features, are a bit more powerful and charge a bit quicker. But, I get excellent results with my 420EX and 550EX and that is what a flash should do.

I like the 420EX because it is lighter in weight and the 550EX because it has better manual capability.

By the way, a 420EX can be used as a slave with the 550EX.

A relatively inexpensive 420Ex would work for the needs of many photographers and would certainly beat using the built-in camera flash.
