this morning at a boot sale I bought an interesting old camera

When I got it home I realised it still had an 8 exposure film in it , unfortunately I'd opened the back about an inch before I realised but it was only for a second , 6 exposures have been taken so I wound it off and removed the film in a dark room

Are they likely to be ruined, the camera has the exposed film side shielded

If not where can I get it developed cheap , as I've no idea what they are I don't want to pay a lot , the camera is from the 1930s

Any suggestions

The film is kodak verichrome pan

The latent images that were already on the take up spool when you opened the back will likely be ok ...possibly a little fogged at the edges if light crept in between the film and backing paper, but definetly worth developing.:)

If i lived closer then I would develop it for you .......I still will if you have no offers elsewhere so long as your happyt o pay post.;)..............EDIT: I see that Steveo has already offered(y)

I've developed quite a lot of old films and verichrome tends to hold latent images very well although it does depend what skills the photographer had!

FWIW, I sent off a roll of 120 this week that had sat in a box brownie for 30-40 years and had been opened more than once inthat time. I fully expected a blank roll, but actually got back 4 frames, a bit ropey but still very acceptable, so worth doing, you never know.

Thanks for the offers, it looks like this film may date from the 50s so not as old as I thought, the changeover from Verichrome to Verichrome Pan apparently took place in about 1954.

The problem with posting them is its £2.80 each way so I may as well see if there's somewhere local that'll process it.

I'm curious to know what's on it but it's likely to be uncle Bert and auntie Ethel rather than something that'll make me rich beyond my wildest dreams

Is that £2.80 price to send within the uk cos i cud send a film from here in France to thé UK for that!

Anyhow it's not such a bad price really when you consider that whoever you send it to will probably develop and scan for nowt!

TBH Darren I think you'll struggle to find anywhere local that will process for less than £5.60 let alone scan it for you. And yes it's almost guaranteed that it will be Bert & Ethel but as a bit of social history it could be fascinating.

if it's over 25mm thick it won't go through the large letter slot at the PO so it's £2.80

I posted a birthday present to my sister a few weeks ago , it was 2041g , I nearly fell through the floor when she said second class was £13.75 , 41g lighter was £2.80 so I ripped some cardboard off

Yes £2.80 to have someone take time to develope with their chemicals that they have to buy then scan with their scanner in their time etc etc

Some folk don't know when the goings good.

My offer to dev, scan print etc is retracted ...shame really as i don't like saying no when i can help someone!

Wouldn't be the same price for the return though. The negs are flat and a roll worth will fit in a standard envelope. Scans returned via Dropbox cost nothing...

Actually now I'm wondering if it has been exposed, it was on 7 in the viewing window , does it count up or down

Does 7 mean it's taken 7 pictures or there's 7 left

It's a long time since I used film and even then it was 35mm

6 or 7 of 12 used, depends whether current frame was used or not, though if camera has been opened its probably 'exposed' anyway.

Just a thought, if someone here will dev and scan, you only need the negs back if they are worth it [and ergo worth the the 2.80 extra to send back], so initial costs are only 2.80 - got to be worth a punt, surely?

depends on format Yv

could be frame 7 of 8, frame 7 of 10, frame 7 of 12, or even frame 7 of 15

tbh it's likely frame 7 of 8 but without knowing the camera make and model, it's hard to say

Btw, the frames begin at 1 and count upwards

If the OP unrolls the film and looks at the backing paper, he will see that there are diifering numbers at different intervals so the film states the correct frame in the relevant camera red window.....In addition the film will be massively overexposed and render pointless being processed .......would resolve the original issue I guess :D

DOH, yes, was thinking straightforward 12 at 6x6, its been a long day. I am just trying to re-scan one of the frames from the one I took out last week, but scanner software has decided it doesn't want to open  Off to reboot, back with a scan shortly ;)

but scanner software has decided it doesn't want to open

if it's any consolation, you're not alone...my desktop decided photoshop no longer existed in its hardrive ......buggered off on holiday for Easter i suppose:arghh: ...anyway i ended up having to re'install it :banghead::banghead:

I didn't mean to seem ungrateful but it looks like that's how it's come across , sorry if I've offended anybody.

Indeed, I think its Easter glitch, rebooted and all is well again.

Dont think you have ;)

Here you go @wack61 proof that even a very old film in a camera that has been opened more then once can survive the experience. This was in a Box Brownie and I think, looking at the fashions, probably late 60's/early 70's? This was also Verichrome Pan film btw, yes you can see some odd marks but it has survived well enough that if I knew who they were I would certainly pass them on. Sadly, they are not related to the friend who gave me the camera, so not quite sure who, what, why, where or when :(

From film found in a old camera I was given by Yvonne White LBIPP - WhiteGoldImages, on Flickr

I would say though, that quibbling about the price of 2 pints (at worst, probably far less than that) for someone doing you a favour of free, the service being the equivalent of (for example) what you'd pay Peak Imaging a MINIMUM of £7.96, and depending on the scan size, anything up to £30.85 plus postage was... well... lets just say it was a trifle less than gracious, and I would very much understand if the kind offer was no longer on the table.

I would certainly take up any kind offers for that service if offered :)

I love the glimpse social history that you get from these recovered rolls of film and think we should do everything we can to save them.

I see that now , my loss

It's been a long time since I shot any film and none of that was 120, I was thinking it'd be £5-6 to get it developed locally

Have you managed to locate where or which line it related to?......perhaps the number on the train could be a lead??

Cool...thanks Nick

Seems this particular loco went for scrap as its not listed as preservered......BUT by making effort to develop thé old film, you @XA2inmypocket have preserved two images of it....excellent!
