Right, who's up for a prime lens challenge during October?

I saw this in another forum a few years ago and thought it'd be a good idea to try the same here.

Oktoberfest Prime Lens Challenge

==================================================

The rules are simple:

1. You choose a single prime or pair of primes to shoot with for the month.

2. You plan to post at least once a week but ideally it'd be once a day (this is a challenge after all!).

3. An 'event pass' is allowed if you have paid work commitments and need to use other lenses, but please try to state these up front.

4. If you wish to test yourself further, you can add any extra rules you wish to impose on yourself. For example, you may choose to shoot only wide open, or to shoot only B&W, or to shoot only people etc etc. Be creative and challenge yourself, that makes it all the more fun.

==================================================

The rules are flexible enough for people to decide on their own level of commitment, whilst still making it a bit of a challenge. So come on, sign up below and commit to a month of having to think harder about your shots and zooming with your feet!

Right, I'll start off by giving my commitment:

1. I'm going to use my 28mm f/2.8 ai-s (manual focus) and my 85mm f/1.8 AF lenses.

2. I'm going to post at least 5 shots per week.

3. No event pass for me - I'm hardcore! :D

4. At least one shot a week will be of people.

Once we get to October, please start your own thread for your shots in the Projects, Personal Challenges & Themes forum HERE, stating your commitment in the first post.

Oh, and if any body is wondering why Oktoberfest, it's because I like beer!

ok Dave.. i'm up for the challenge ...

I'll see your 4 rules and commit mine...

1. Having only 1 prime lens its the star of the show the nifty fifty.... thank god i don't only have a 600mm as a prime

2. I intend a min of 3 shots a week...

3. no passes as i too am hardcore .. though many would say thats just the magazine collection propping my tv table up with....

4. They must all have the colour..??? red..because this looks good as selective colour monos ...

5. Every shot will be taken from a behind a double decker bus

6. in the event of lens cap failure i will submit a vintage seaside postcard from bournemouth :bonk:

7. there will be no animal shots...

8. washing machines are not out of bounds....

Personally i'm not a beer drinker..i'd rather stick to the cooking sherry myself...

ps... rules 5 to 8 are void due to too much cooking sherry while posting entry...

..pps somebody wake me up when oktober comes...

I'm in and will be using my Sigma 85mm 1.4 and Sony 35mm 1.8 and will post 3 pics a week.

Kev can I kill 2 birds with 1 stone and make my double decker pic the red selective colour mono pic.:D

On go on then dave,

I'm in. Will be using my nikon 50mm 1.4 and nikon 105mm 2.8.

I will submit at least five shots a week.

I will shoot wide open.

I will unfortunately have to use "Event passes". I've got a couple of marine events, and I don't think 50mm or 105mm will cut it. Also got a couple of gigs with the local mayor so will have to break out the zoom.

Hope that's okay.

Dean???? you want to take shots of killing two birds...with a stone... with a red DD in the background. ... i'm picturing it now... thats a hell of a scene..

Spot on Tom, look forward to seeing your stuff! :)

This sounds interesting. I need a kick up the rear end to get out taking photographs again. My 52+ (which turned out to be a 240) last year took it's toll and I have shot very little this year. Maybe this is just what I need to get going again?

However, my only prime is my 60mm macro lens which narrows things down a bit.

I need to give this some thought so put me down as a "maybe". Please give me a reminder closer to the time in case I forget.

Thanks,

Jenny

Hi Jenny, I hope you do join us. It'll be a challenge for sure, but just think of the advantages - all that exercise you'll get zooming with your feet, and you'll have a super lightweight kit to carry around for a month!

I'm already looking through my calendar and am thinking about all the exercise...

Oh heck, I've just looked and Ive got a day booked in with fozzy to go birding... Hmmm lol

Do they make 10x Tcs? Lol

Sounds fun. I only own 2 primes - 50mm and 105 macro so plenty of scope. Did a lowlight workshop with only those two so it is possible to do varied shots with them.

Depends on how rubbish October weather is as to whether there will be anything more interesting than macro cat paws produced...

Will probably try and get out during September with a large zoom to get it out of my system :)

You need a 300mm F/4 mate! Get Andy to join us. It'll be a good excuse for him to buy some new lenses!

Not sure if TCs are allowed - that's a lens after all! (Unless you shoot with it on it's own!)

Excellent Suz, you could make your Rule 4: No shots of cat paws :)

got the idea from the cancer research dudes... and you pledge to take photos of nothing but bods with moustaches??? NOT beards... just mo's...

..anyone??

i'm going to give it a try... then try to work something out for december.. but don't know yet???... guess the run up to the festive period... grab a shot everyday of santa sightings?? :naughty:

Can't wait to see Dave's pics from the Deer rut taken on an 85mm prime.

" 3. No event pass for me - I'm hardcore! "

I'm not going to pretend I will leave my other lens in the cupboard for a month, but I will commit to:

1. Shooting with my 50mm prime and my 16-35 at the 16mm end.

2. I will shoot 5 photos a week

3. I will freely use other lens if the scene requires

4. At least one shot a week will by taken using a shutterspeed of at least 1 second.

Excellent, welcome aboard Tom.

I love a challenge!

I'm just being honest...

And there was me thinking this was about beer :(

I'll use my 105mm f/2.5 MF or 50mm f/1.8, and will do 4 shots per week. No event pass. My challenge will be that two per week must be of the 105mm MF wide open.

Ps. I am well up for movember. Been a participant once and a captain the second time. Raised a total of £11k in the two years for charity. Shooting Mo's yeah!

Excellent, look forward to seeing your shots Jean-Paul, particularly with the 105mm :)

PS - it is about beer - if you're anything like me it's all the beer you'll drink due to sheer frustration!!!!

Cheers :) at least the beer gives me an idea for a theme. Really like the idea, hopefully by the end of the month I've got my Manual Focus cracked if you pardon the pun.

Ok you mentioned this last night Dave......

1. I'm trying to decide what lenses to use, have a 100mm f2.8 IS macro, 200mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4 and have a 35mm f2 on order (hope it comes before October). So if the 35mm comes before October I'll use that then the 200mm.

2. Reckon I'll try for 2 shots a week (no point saying more as my work commitments mean this will be hard enough)

3. One shot will be wide open

Brilliant Julian. I'm really starting to look forward to the challenge now! :cuckoo:

I`ll have a go at this....

using 35 f2 & 300 f4

no other rules for me, as this will be tricky enough ;)

will attempt to post a shot a day throughout.

Ok I am in... Need a boot up the backside frankly...

I only have 2 primes so will have to be them 50mm macro and 50mm so may not get a variety of shots but will def be a challenge!!

My own rules :-

Rule 1 I will aim to take an image every day

Rule 2 I will use my macro and my nifty fifty on alternate days

Rule 3 I have combined this challenge with two others, hence the rule changes

Rule 4 My Oktoberfest images will have a theme :)

Rule 5 I will take an image every day with only either my nifty or my macro but will need the long lens on at least two days in October

Thats as far as I am prepared to commit myself :) which now re-reading is pretty far
