Yes
Right. Advice needed....

My sigma 10-20 just doesn't cut it on the sharpness stakes at the moment for me. It's ok, but could do better after seeing the results from some prime lenses and some of nikons pro zooms. I need a sharper wide-angle.

Do I.....

a) try to get a better copy of the sigma. Do-able but will take a loss and there's no guarantee of a good un and I think even then it wont come up to my expectations

b) Invest in the Nikon 12-24. From what I hear this lens isn't much sharper then the sigma but is twice the price. It has constant f4 but I'm not bothered about that. I need biting sharpness and good depth of field. Not carpy wideangle bokeh.

c) Start using older prime nikons and accept the fact that none will go as wide but the quality will be better. To be honest this is the cheapest route and I don't often use the sigma at it's widest setting and when I do I often find myself cropping in a bit afterwards. I can then keep the sigma for the interiors work.

d) Possibly most expensive and most drastic option. Sell up and go full frame with canon. To get the same FoV I can use less wide lenses and the resolution of the lenses isn't pushed as hard in the name of compromise. I don't get on with the ergonomics of canon, I can't use Capture NX anymore and I'm not keen on the colour rendition from their cmos sensors.

e) wait for nikon to go full frame and bite the bullet with that when and if it ever happens. It's not likely at the mo I think, despite all the rumours about the new D3. Will be very expensive and I have yet to look at the quality of the glass available for Nikon film cameras.

At the moment I'm veering towards the older Nikon primes. I don't use AF when I shoot landscapes as I try (not always succesfully) to use hyperfocal ranges.

Any advice people?

you really only have two sensible options. The best for image quality would be to get a 5D and the 17-40 f4. Or if you want to spend silly money the 1Ds II and possibly the 16-35 f2.8.

Or... just swap the sigma for the Nikon 12-24. This option obviously isn't as wide as a 16 on a full frame canon but it's the one I'd go for if I was in you're shoes. The Nikon lens is much better than the sigma, partly just because it is and and partly as it's not quite so wide.

The canon 5D will probably beat you're current body for IQ but even as a user and fan of Canon kit, I have to say I don't like working with it at all.

I personally would say go for the Nikon prime lenses. Just out of interest, if you did decide to go for this route, which lenses would you be looking at? only because I was thinking of getting the 10-20 at some point....

OR..

Im not sure what other lenses you have, but the 17-55 f2.8 is an outstanding lens. If 17mm is wide enough for you, it might be worth considering this one, and perhaps selling another lens if this one covers its focual range? Just a thought. :)

Looking at the financial side of things I think it's going to have to be the Nikon 12-24 and a couple of wide-ish primes. Probably the 24mm 2.8 AI-s and 35mm 2.0 AI-s from yesteryear. Will give me wide angle when I need it and prime sharpness (although not with the huge expansiveness) when I want that. Should hopefully be a good combination.

Woody, 17mm is just about wide enough, but not for work alas. I tried a couple of shots with this lens when I was at Lyme Regis (my Mates) but wasn't overly impressedconsidering the price he paid. I Certainly don't think it was 300% better than the sigma by any means. Especially not when the sigma is stopped down a smidge.

Have you looked at the Tokina 12-24mm? f/4 across the range and it seems to get good reviews. Apparently it is on a par with the Nikon 12-24mm for IQ and is made mostly of metal.

In the months leading up to the final purchase of the sigma 10-20, I read plenty of reviews, and the Nikon 12-24 is no where near being value for money, in fact, it hardly differs from the sigma 12-24 [in final image quality], apart from the size of price tag, so I think the prime lens route is probably the way to go if staying with Nikon.

A complete change of brand is a very expensive route and seems a bit pointless if you are happy with your kit otherwise.
