I feel silly asking and I am reading up on posts but can't work my head around how or what I need to have a wireless flash system with my canon 600d? I have 2 white umbrella ATM and one umbrella softbox with cheap light stands from EBay. Can someone explain to me plz how I get all this to work?

Thank you

What speedlites do you currently have and what's your budget for wireless triggers?

Thx I don't have anything at all :( I don't know where to start. Iv seen a lot of threads talking about youngno flashes but that's it. I don't know how to use them? Budget wise under £100 for a basic setup?

So you don't have anything at all, or you don't have any flashes but you have brollies, stands and a softbox?

If you want to use the 60D onboard settings/master mode then you'll need a flash that can act as a slave, the cheapest of which is probably the YN 565EX. If you're happy using manual flash power etc then you can probably get 2 of the cheaper YN flashes for around your budget and trigger them using dumb optical slave mode (as long as you're inside and happy for the onboard to be part of the exposure to some extent)

Thanks. I have the stands and broil lies just need the flashes. Not manual tho. So I need to get the youngno plus triggers? I would attach the youngno flashes to the light stands instead of the lights I have? How would I get it to flash? I'm do sorry I really am struggling :(

If you want ETTL (non-manual) in your budget then pretty much your only wireless option is a single 565EX and trigger it using the onboard flash.

What lights do you already have? You need a light stand with an umbrella swivel with a coldshoe on the top (or a spigot on the top if you're going to buy triggers with a screw thread in the bottom)

Thank you Steven. I shall check which stands I have and report back tonight after work.

Ok, you'll need to unscrew that top bit and take it off the light stand and replace it with something like this cheap and cheerful umbrella swivel:

The picture is actually upside-down - it attaches to the light stand and has a tightening cold shoe to put your flash on, and a spring loaded/screw tightened hole to put the umbrella through.

After some thought and budget planning i could not afford the canon but have got myself a Nissin flash. Wanted to know if the cold shoe suggested by Steven above would work with this plz?

works fine with nissin flash's

one more question, is it worth getting this to use behind my subjects with colored gels?

Any view on the cheap speedlight I linked to plz? It would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Not got that particular one, but I've got a YN565 II which is fine for my use. There are 44 reviews on that link, most are favourable, so if you're just going to use it for a bit of separation it's probably fine, though you'll have to set the flash duration / power manually.

Depends on the effect you want to have. If you had a coloured gel on that and fired it, you'd affect the entire image as you haven't got a light modifier on it to control where the light actually goes, so it spills out everywhere. This isn't exactly ideal, but theres a few options you could explore.

"barn doors" allow you to try and focus the light to specific areas, which would allow you to light walls etc behind your subject, or focus the light into the ceiling above to try and defuse it onto the subjects below, although the latter isn't good when combined with gels. Theres a "snoot" adapter you can also get for flashguns which contain a honeycomb filter that really allows you to have a spotlight affect. These are far more useful with coloured gels and are used extensively in product photography as they can add depth to flat images by focusing coloured light from a different angle to the main light source.

Thank you very much. I see what you mean. I am a it presses for time, but thank you very much. I will have a proper read later.
