I am considering a M9 as a "compact" alternative however. I'll probably stick some tape over the Leica logo... enough people think I'm an arse already :)

I have considered Leica's on and off, but there's nothing in them that would change my life, or could be done with something far cheaper / something I already have. I'm sure that if I actually managed to persuade a dealer to let me hold one and try one my mind would change, but objectively at least, I can't justify one. But as an object of desire, there's few things in photography to match them.

I don't have a Leica but I do have a modern rangefinder (Voigtlander Bessa). I bought it because I like the rangefinder way of working (framelines, full DoF, etc) but one of the most interesting things I've noticed is that it changes the way people react to being photographed. Everyone seems to like it and to enjoy being photographed with it, rather than some feeling threatened the way they do with a DSLR. I can only imagine a "proper" Leica would be the same but more so.
