I'm wondering why it is that everyone else in the building seems to have decided that because it's November, the heating must be turned up to "Tac-Nuke".
My vents are wedged on "open" (oooh Matron), so it's boiling in here.
November 3rd and I've got a fan blowing full belt

They dont seem to be able to get it right in my office. Its absolutely freezing in here today, and you can guarantee when it is warm outside it will be too warm in the office. same every year...quite annoying really. Sitting here with a fleece on at the moment

I could grow orchids in my office.
And it's peeing it down outside.
And my commute will blow because of the rain.
And it's getting dark.
Humbug.....I'm goin' 'ome!

9 minutes and im off.

Had enough today, just got to brave Tescos on the way home :(

Hope your commute doesnt suck a fat one!

... and here's me normally working in unheated or ventillated rooms/houses.

The operator rooms for the engine dyno test cells at work share the heating in groups of 4 or 5, but just one cell gets to control the temperature so the rest of us have to endure the heat or cold. I don't even know which cell has the controls. Because we move to different cells depending on work load, there's no real way of knowing whether the temperature will be hot, cold or just right until we get to work. I'm wearing jeans in my operators room, yet my mate in the room next door is wearing shorts.

i prefer a cold office.... my thought process is simple....

"Ladies, you would still look far better in 4 layers at 18 deg C than I would in boxers only at 23 deg C."

Anyhow, my Tribunal is next week..

It's yer age, Ruth! (Only 1/2 in jest... A lady in Mrs Nod's old office was all over the place as far as temperature and had the desk by the thermostat. She was also the union rep.)

Even joking about it earns you a severe slapping lol.

What annoys me at work is people moaning that it's cold at this time of year and still wearing shorts !!!
This will go on through till we get snow

A few years ago myself and one other person were designated as the only people who could amend the aircon. Cue millions of daily it's too hot \ it's too cold emails. I ended up having to send an email saying do not email of us, speak to your line manager if you are unhappy. It was literally an impossible situation, made worse by the fact when the heating came on it was for the full building, we could not control it on our floor.

Thankfully we have now moved an have a much better climate control system in place and everyone is reasonable happy - a miracle!

The legal minimum for office envirironments is 16C I believe and 19C for classrooms.

With the demise of filing cabinets and the installation of super Buulding Managment Systems, leading to the restacking of buildings with more people, I was able to make a great living pointing out that in many cases offices were easier to cool in the Winter than to heat.

So buildings would cool over niggt and at 6am the BMS would start heating. Loads of staff arrive 8am onwards and by 10 the Building Manager would lower temp but with 3000+ people installed, the temperature wouls still rise and the cooling system would kick in (I kid you not).

So fuel bills would be ridiculous and staff wearing T shirts in December in one bit of the building and coats in other areas.

There was, in passing, little that could be done for women of a 'certain' age, they had their own central heating plant room.....

Do your next of kin want flowers or charitable donations?

Had to change the lighting of said women of a ceetain age to frequencies covering the 'daylight' range. Normally this time of the year kicked off the requests.

Simple fact - some people would ring the building manager to ask for the heating to be increased or turned down according to their situation at that point in the day.

On top of all that there were the other factors, like how the heating was delivered, zones and haphazard zonal area when full open plan layouts were implemented (ie very senior departmental heads lost the internal pre fab panrls that formed their own offices...) and they fought back. Simple economics on costs per m2 per annum. One government department was able to release 2 complete buildings of 3 and restack the remaining building through smaller desks (1.6m or 1.8m instead of 2.0m - 2.3m) and home working/hot desking). Added to which the digital age killed the need for huge amounts of cabinets for storing paper files. In the middle of all that we had (as consultants) to then bring average temperatures down to 19c as part of Carbon reduction commitments.....

So the whole issue of individual needs, for whatever reason, were taken into consideration and required building managers to do their level best for all requests. The Civil Service and Private companies had very similar issues. The former now less so after 2010 as 'outsourcing' stripped the numbers down and private companies had, lets say, a less tolerant programme called "take it or leave it".

previous work used to have heating mostly on in the summer and mostly off in the winter in addition to leaking roof. I never understood why.

Madness but not unusual. For every reason offered there could be 20 more!

In our office (used to be part of a chemical lab) the heating/air con generally blows cold air when it's cold outside and warm air when it's warm outside!
Apparently the 'dampers' are set for 90% fresh air (due to the previous chemical lab) and the system is not strong enough to heat the cold air or cool the warm air more than about 10 degrees.

When it's cold I get out of my car and put a coat on to go into the office :-)
