Off to Chester Zoo, Reluctantly

Up bright and early faffing about changing all the clocks, and all the other bits and bobs I do first thing in the morning. We are off to Chester Zoo today ( me somewhat reluctantly, I hate crowds and queues :( ) , I am not too keen on places like Zoos etc. But the missus wants to go, as all the kids and grand kids are going, so I have to turn that frown upside down and get on with it. Taking the Fuji X10 with me, as that is the only decent camera I have, until the bog standard DSLR arrives, looking forward to that :). Anyway, got two cards formatted and batteries on charge.

Just hoping I can get into the swing of things, but rain is supposed to be about, so I am not too sure. But it will be a pleasure to see the children / grand children :). Will be setting off about 10am, hope not too much traffic on the road. Hope everyone else has a good Easter..
 
The X10 can produce some good images and is ideal for your activities today.

OK, batteries fully charged cards cleaned, X10 packed in a small bag. Butties made flask done, tickets booked, Paracetamol at the ready. Setting off in about five minutes, oh hum I hope there is no masses of traffic on the road...OK, we are off :)
 
We all got back from Chester Zoo in one piece, pretty good fun really in the end. Just a little crowded and having to do lots of queuing up to see things, not overly keen on seeing animals locked up in enclosures, and not very happy with the way we all gawped at the animals. Some people were poking fingers and making fun of the animals, just seems wrong. But I did have fun being with all the family, and the Fuji X10 coped pretty well. Most people used their phones for photos, masses of people with DSLRs. Spotted one trendy feller with an X100 on a leather strap, he seemed to know what he was doing, or at least he was scratching his chin and squinting while moving back and forth getting his composition right.

Only got a few photos of the kids, got masses of video of them enjoying the day however. So the X10 coped pretty well really. Started to pour down towards the end, we went home soaking wet. But the important thing is, we have got some lovely memories captured on video :)

Our eyes were stinging when we were in the enclosures, possibly from the urine. We were walking around soaked, we ate our lunch with rain dripping down our necks. The children loved it all, of course we all had a wonderful time :rolleyes:

Have you tried the South Lakes zoo John? When i went it was much quieter than Chester so more enjoyable from that point of view. Not as big by a long way but they have bits where the animals roam free and you walk through the enclosures which is nice. It can be a little bit of a trek as it's not near the motorway etc but it is a pleasant drive through the south Lake District to get there!

Not sure if it's still open? They were in dispute last year with the council & they said they may be closing down.

We went about 18 months ago (visited a few times over the years) & thought it looking a bit run down in parts.

The tiger that killed the keeper a while ago, has recently been euthanised.

Looks like I might be able to duck out of another Zoo visit then :)
