I am off to a cruise on 19th for 2 weeks and currently I have Canon350D kit lens , Canon 24-105 IS L Lens, 10-20mm Sigma and the Canon 60mm macro but I am scratching my head to figure out if I may need a 200 or 300 range zoom lens too  which I don't have currently [can't afford tbo :'(].

Anyone gone cruising before and had a similar lens experience, advise would be very much appreciated.

Where you cruising?

Simple answer is take the 24-105 and the 10-20mm. The macro you probably wont need and its covered by the L

cruisng to
Gibraltar
Ajaccio, France
Livorno, Italy
Civitavecchia, Italy
Cagliari, Italy
Cadiz, Spain
Lisbon, Portugal
Vigo, Spain

I thought the macro won't be much of a use but was not sure if 105 will be zoom enough:thinking:

You done the cruise thing before? Always struck me as 2 weeks on a luxury prison with brief outings :)

Maybe I should try it before I write it off. Perhaps when I'm older - unless I've got it all wrong which is always possible ;)

No RobertP, 1st time cruising m8. Part of missus perks from work ;)

:nono: Robert - Did a cruise round the Baltic to celebrate 25yrs of wedded bliss & highly recommend it - Visited Gadnya (sp) Tahlin Stockholm St Petersburg & Copenhagen - Only had a p&s camera then :bonk: but it would be nice to do it again as its D-SLR heaven
Hoping to do another around the fiords (sp) this year (using my BIG birthday as an excuse this time :embarrassed:)
Paul ;)
PS - Zahir I'd take any lens you have up to 300mm!

Regarding the lens, go with 24-105 and the 10-20, basically when you get to each port, you'll be taking loads of snap snots of the areas etc. so I don't think you'll need more length than 105mm.

Regarding cruising, I went on my first around 4 years ago which made me 27, its not an old farts holiday thing, our ship had 14 decks, with everything from a cinema to theatre, loads of restaurants, trust me at 2am in the morning going for a sit down slap up meal beats a crappy kebab anytime. It was great, waking up in a different country each morning. We did a cruise and stay ours was around the Med
Majorca-Tunisia-Malta-Citiavechhia(SP)-Santa Margerita-Portafino-Monte Carlo-Barcelona. :D

Thanks guys. I will settle for 10-20 & 24-105 and not worry too much about more zoom lens. Hope it will be a nice relaxing holiday with some great photography. Watch this space:nuts:

Really interesting thread. Were on the new Ocean Village 2, launched from Southampton recently, in July. Its "cruising for those who don't do cruising" so i am really looking forward to it. The significant other however has reservations about visiting Tunis & also has nightmares about volcanoes so we are going to Pompeii- great!!!

Cant wait. Any other "cruzin" tips greatly appreciated

Have a great time Chouglez and I'm sure you will...

I did a 6 months World Cruise as a Crew Member in 1959/60 wow it was great and I was working , the passengers had a super time not all of em were cruisers some just port to port. A few very Rich did the complete cruise..

I would love to do a cruise now but my other half half is sea sick on a rowing boat on the local park lake..the last time on a Canary Islands Ferry between she was so ill it was untrue...

Thanks Dave for your good wishes m8. 1960, I was unborn then :) But I am sure times have changed in 50 years or so. Will post my experiences on here when I am back with hopefully some pictures

The Baltic Trip I did was on the ship used in the "Love Boat" TV series :embarrassed: - to keep things "un-sea-sicky" these ships have "stabilisers" and most of the time it is like walking around on dry land - However as we left the Baltic back into the North Sea we hit a Force 9 Gale & the ship's stabilisers were no use at all - I am not very squeamish but I was even more scared than the time I found myself stood by the gents urinal next to Shakin' Stevens
Paul ;)

How ironical Paul? Shakin' in the Gent's urinal

I have friends who did it on Ocean Village last.....had a great time and I believe are going again this year too........so must have been good.

there's a coincidence. We're doing one week cruising the med starting on Monday. Then one week on Mallorca. The only difference is that, in our case, there'll be about five weeks between them.

Well, I am off tomorrow [Saturday] for 2 weeks. Hoping to have a decent break in a long time and capture that prized sunrise shot on this trip and a few more hopefully :D

This then hold on to the fort of tpf............:p

Many thanks for all your advise and suggestions.

Back from the cruise and got over 1000 pics. Have to get around sorting them out and uploading them on Flicr etc.

Watch this space.

All cruises make lotsa money on the side with captive audience.

For e.g. Avoid Cruise exursions as much as possible as they are a big rip off.
For instance, we were docked in citivecchia, 1.5 hours from Rome by train. Cruise exersion for 2 people, $150 but we ventured out on our own hence we spend around $25 for train tickets.

All cruises promote loads of drinking on the ship so if you drink keep a tab [or in this case not ] Good job me & mrs don't.

Do your home work for each port by visiting websites such as http://www.portreviews.com/ and the likes of it and have everything handy written down in an organised fashion else not many in other countries outside U.K speak English and communicating can be difficult.

take adequate memory along as buying abroad is sooooo expensive

in each city pick 1 or 2 at the most attaractions you wanna visit because belieive me "Rome was not built in a day   " so quality is better than quantitiy.

Always keep hydrated and sunglasses, SPF15 & a cap/hat is a must.

Look forward to seeing some piccies from your visit.
