Been asked to have a go at some portrait work for a friend so I've been looking at getting my flash off the camera. Not too bothered about wireless strobe work for now whilst I just have a speedlite, that'll come later.

For getting my speedlite 430 ex II off cam (5d mark II), a sync cord of some sort is presumably the solution. First Q, does a PC sync cord do pretty much the same thing, I read on strobist that you could use one in lieu of a normal TTL hotshoe sync cord? I'd prefer a cord 10 or so metres in length to give me flexibility in moving it behind subjects and PC sync cords seem to do this a lot easier and without the flex wiring look like they'll get in the way far less.

But my understanding is that I can't connect one of these to my 430speedlite although my 5D Mark II has the connection. Am I therefore restricted to the hotshoe sync cords or is there an adapter I could add to my flash that'd keep the same functionality? If so, where could I get one of these fairly cheaply?

Thanks

A major difference between a TTL cord & a pc-sync is that the former will allow the flash to work in auto mode, the later will be manual mode only.

pc cords carry the same signal as wireless triggers, just the trigger signal

look in the advertisers section for flash in the pans thread for a 10m ttl cable (I'm considering picking one up for running and gunning)

You could do it with a PC cord and an adapter but I think a dedicated cord is a much better idea and of course you retain auto-TTL control. Much more secure fixings either end. Flash In The Pan in the advertisers' section sells a 10m one for about £40. You'll struggle to beat that regardless of the type of cable.

If you're not bothered about auto-TTL, he also sells the Yongnuo RF-602 radio triggers which are very good and even cheaper!

Buy one off Ebay HKYONGUOPHOTOEQUIPMENT for £26-12 post free only took four days from HK for delivery.
