Hi im new to the forum, been viewing for a while though.

I want to get into strobing now for my next adventure.
Just wondering what people would recommend on a budget of about £200-300?

I got offered the Nissin di622 at £99 each but i was looking from something that works wireless? I understand they work by the onboard flash.

I need to take them on location so im guessing flashgun/speedlites would be best although if anyone has lighting kit of different style please share!

Im going to be using my canon 1000d with the lighting and i do have a pro linca trigger from when i do studio work.

The Nissin works off your on-board flash. For a cheap, play around solution, you can blank off your on-board flash so it only flashes towards the Nissin

radio triggers are the way forward (I really rate the ones FiTP sells) I'd be tempted to buy a stand set of triggers adaptor and brolly from graham and a430ex because it is handy on camera every now and again.

Or get a few of his flashes and set up a 2 or 3 light look (maybe 1 softbox, 2x umbrella and homemade snoots/grids?)

how do you do that then?
Ive pm'd graham to see what he suggests!

any other models i should look into?

Welcome to TP :)

You can't do that. The Canon on-board flash will not fire anything remotely at all (except on the new 7D). End of. You need a master unit for that, such as a 580EXII for £300 or ST-E2 (or similar third party unit). E-TTL is really good but expensive.

Manual is much cheaper. I agree with David - Drop Flash In The Pan a PM and he'll kit you out with cash to spare. It's all here - good value and good service  http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157807

What he means is using the first fire of the on board flash to trigger the off camera flashgun using the light sensor on the flashgun. It is a crude, and not amazingly reliable method, which does mean having the on camera flash fire and add light into the shot.

I do it with my Fuji bridge and a £25 jeesops flashgun, so it can be done. End of.:lol::thumbs:

I don't think that's what he meant at all. He meant to physically shield the flash so that it only pointed at the remote gun and didn't influence the picture, meanwhile forgetting that the pre-flash (which cannot be disabled) would trigger it.

Yes I know you can do a fudge/bodge/workaround by firing the pre-flash manually and then waiting for the remote gun to recyle, but it's not a practical solution at all.

You can however get optical slaves that ignore the pre-flash (so I'm told) but I don't know who makes them. One guy on here did actually modify a slave himself to do it, but it seems a bit academic when radio triggers are so good and cheap.

I know what you mean, radio flashes ar emuch better ;)

My flashgun can be setup to ignore the preflashes and fire on the main flash of the camera. Do canon really not let you do that on such an expensive gun?

another vote for FiTP (Graham). I would suggest picking up one of the newer YongNuo ETTL flashes, 1 remote trigger set and 1 or 2 of the older manual flashguns (he has an offer on for £25 at the moment). The manual ones will happily fire optically as slaves from the master ettl one. Spend the rest of the money on a softbox and backdrop + stands.

canon guns have no optical slaves, but can fire manually. Canon pop ups will only fire ettl with compensation

Id just like to say thanks for the responses people! much appreciated.
I was asking about cutting out the pre flash on the onboard flash just to confirm that.

I was playing around with my jessops 360 flash and i notice that triggers with the onboard flash. Also my prolinca trigger makes it go off aswell but as soon as you put the trigger on the camera it does nothing.

Anyway... i did message Flash in the pan and he sorted me out what i needed to get going at a great price. Should have them tomorrow morning!!! I will be ordering a softbox and stands pretty soon to.
