Yes
how do i fire it while ist off the camera 450d? wireless, i presume i need some sort of wireless sender, but do i also need a receiver or will the 580 ex11 pick it up??

To use it off-camera retaining E-TTL exposure control you need to trigger it with a master unit (ST-E2 or 580EXII, or expensive Pocket Wizard) or hard wire it with a dedicated lead.

All other methods are full manual only. Best way is with a radio trigger transmitter and receiver units. Yongnuo RF-602 set is good and £28 from Flash In The Pan here

Or you could do it with an ordinary sync cable connected to the camera with a co-ax hot-shoe adapter.

Systems to control Off Camera Flash retaining ETTL are;

Pocket Wizard FlexTT5 & Mini TT1 (Radio) - Retains high speed flash
Radio Poppers PX (Radio) - retains High Speed Fash too!
Canon ST-E2 - By way of Infra Red
Or another 580EX on camera

You can also buy triggers from ebay to allow manual firing of your flash (see above) but nmo ETTL

I use Skyports but only in manual - more reliable than ebay triggers - but more expensive. I also have an ST-E2.

You don't need another 580exII to go on camera you can use the one you have and buy a 430exII as the off camera flash.. but I would recommend the cheap radio triggers to just give it a go, if it's not for you then you have not wasted a shed load of dosh!

I'm no expert on flash equipment, but reading this doesnt it make better sense to buy the 430exII to complement the 580exII as the price of at least a used one compares to a ST-E2 or pocket wizard?

If you want to use the 580EX as your flash of choice and maintain all of its functions, the only CANON solutions which you can use to trigger it are the ST-E2 remote trigger which sits on top of your camera on the hot shoe or a second flash on the hot shoe capable of acting as a master, (which you can disable in terms of it sending out light). Such flash units as far as I know are the 550EX or a second 580EX. All the CANON solutions work by Infra Red - and this has always been fine and dandy in the situations I have encountered. Your remote 580EX would be set to be a slave.

(Looking to sell one of my two 550EXs by the way or part ex for an 580EX II)

arhh right i see,.....think i might end up going down the 430ex11 route tbh (for long term), as like has been mentioned they are around the same price as the st-e2. but then again i want to be able to give it a quick go without the cost. so might get one of those cheap triggers to give it a go

anyone had any dealings with any of the cheapies?

If you're not using ETTL then the new RF-602 radio triggers are very reliable.

That's a good route. 580 on camera as master and 430 as remote slave. E-TTL all the way.

If you then get a Yongnuo RF-602 with two receivers you can then use both guns for romote strobistry, albeit manual only. They work more reliably than the cheaper ebay types.
