off camara flash help ( ideas )!!

nikon d90 is my camara with only the inbuilt flash at present, however...some years ago i purchased a flash unit ( miranda 350c ) very basic single centre pin
that i never actualy used,found it the othier day in a box of old gear still in box and bag !!
now as i am doing some macro work with coins it would be helpfull to have a diffused flash to one side of the work to give a little definition to the detail on the coins, and to this end i was wondering if i could get a stand and a ttl off camara flash cord and use it, and save a few quid into the bargain.
SO !! will it work is the question ??

I think I'm right in saying that this flashgun has a high voltage trigger. Therefore the only safe way of firing it would be optical trigger (cheapest) or wireless trigger!
