Hi All,

So far i havent needed anything larger than a 60*60cm soft box for my small studio. However i am now branching out into families and need bigger.

So i am torn between buying a 100cm*100cm softbox or a 90cm octobox.

I will be photographing children, pets, babies and small families- as my studio is space limited.

The only difference i can think of is the catchment light in the eye.

If you were to choose which would you go for?

Thanks
Dawn

I have a 150cm. octobox, it is massive compared to a softbox. You may be better off getting strip lighting, these light the whole subject but are only about 5'x3'. One each side and a small softbox to the front will give pleasing results. You can always take the boxes off to experiment with other light modifiers.

Dawn,

How many lights do you have?

If you work with just 1 light then 90-100cm or 150cm Octobox.
Where you pointing and how many in the family would be require careful planning.

If you have more lights then the modifiers can be smaller and more directional

I use a 120cm profold octa box from Lencarta. As I prefer the catchlights from an octa :)

If you work from a small space I'd really recommend the folding one, it can be up and down within seconds and makes it much easier to store (I'd HATE to assemble it every time I had a shoot!).

I also use a strip box as a separator light. :)
