Yes
Hi all
Total newbie I add.☺
When using my D200 with a Tamron 18-200 lens I can take a photo and when checking it would be over exposured take the same picture and it's perfect,I don't think it's the lens as this gives superb images on my d3300 ,it happens 2 out of 10 times ,I have set the ISO now to 125 so interested to see what happens?any ideas ?
Thank you.

I don't have the lens but I have the D200 and D5200. I'd try cleaning the contacts in th camera and check the aperture lever is working properly. The camera is getting on a bit now :) and may need a clean.

Hi Kendo1
How easy is it and what contacts do you mean, the lens to camera ones?
How do you check the app lever?
Sorry complete novice, thank you.

When you say you are taking the same picture do you mean exactly the same, from a tripod, same lighting?

What metering mode do you have it set to?

Ken meant the aperture wheell in the front under the trigger.
Make sure that the aperture really changes in the VF as
rotating the wheel to confirm the contacts are clean.

Yes, the contacts lens to camera. Both may be cleaned with
a lint free cloth and, eventually, lens cleaning liquid or alcohol.
Very easy operation but don't over do it with any liquid.

Hi Nawty
Yes on the tripod seconds after checking via the screen.
I previously turned of the auto preview to save battery ,got home the first time to discover I lost some precious pictures.
So now I bring up the picture to check.
Not to sure on metering yet wished I knew a bit more,I leave it in P mode at the moment.

This is the very first thing to change as the camera
is controlling the shoot and not YOU. Try A mode
(aperture priority)

Hi
Ok this makes sense ,i'll drop the comfort blanket.
A mode here I come,thanks Kodiak qc

I had the same problem, on my A7 and it happened because I forgot to turn off the center spot metering, and initially it looked like it is completely random... worth checking anyway

Thanks Plamen
Having a look at metering and I have had it set to the centre metering setting.
Do you recommend a setting, thanks Folks.

Centre weighted should be fine, the risk was that you were using spot metering which can drastically change exposure on very slight differences of subject.

If you're in aperture priority, shooting wide open in sunlight, it's quite possible you're hitting your max shutter speed and so over exposing, too...

Hi
The problem I had was in P mode to be fair. The more I've read it does seem like it could have been metering wrong.

It could also be sticky aperture blades so have a look at those by pinging the aperture control lever in the lens mount a few times.

Hi Nawty
I double checked the aperture lever for a random 100 times all seemed to hit the same position and seemed ok ,thank you.

The meter will work the same in all the modes. P, A and S are ALL automatic modes, the only difference being that in P mode the camera doesn't remember the aperture setting (as it will in A) or shutter speeds (in S). If you use P, you can easily shift away from the camera's suggested setting by using the scroll wheel.
