I have just taken the chance to get a cheap mac to see how I get on with the OS, I am also starting to try and edit more / better, I have found I am experimenting more with black and white, one problem I am -having is that whilst I am liking Capture NX-D it does not have a B&W converter??
I know NX2 did but I cannot load that as its not compatible with El Capitain (*%^$), I was hoping to use one these for the ability to batch process exposure etc, (I do a lot in sports halls with even but poor light).

So what would your collective knowledge recommend for me to use for general editing, B&W conversions and batch processing of exposure? Should I just pay up and try lightroom (it takes me a while to grasp things so the trial possibly wont be long enough) and match it with the photoshop elements I have or is there something better for me as beginner to learn for more ambitious editing? As long as they work I don't mind using more that one program..

Cheers and thanks in advance
Ian

Can't go too far wrong with the Adobe Cc photography subscription, alternatively there's alien skin and silver fx for bw simpleness

Thank you, I think I will try the trial and take a weekend to try and get into lightroom, had a play for an hour or so a couple of years ago and nothing seemed instinctive, but to be fair I didn't really give it a chance.

Have you tried NIK Silver fx ? (Now free software)
Not yet but I will now thank you..

Exactly my first thoughts with LR, got the trial and dumped it and stayed with just PS/Camera Raw. Now I wouldn't be without it.

I also used NX-2 quite a bit in the past, NX-D really isn't a patch on it with the lack of local adjustments. As mentioned, Nik software is available now for free and uses the u-point selections you'd be familiar with from NX-2.

Thanks Deckard, good to know I am not the only one that didn't like LR at first glance :)

Me neither, took the PS subscription and downloaded bridge too as the file manager. still use NXD though purely to open the NEF file and save it as a tif before I proceed to open it in camera raw. I find NXD renders detail better than opening straight into ACR.

Thanks Neil.
