I have a Nikon D3100 and am slowly but getting into sports photography, action shots and the like. I currently have a Nikon 55-200mm f/4.-5.6 AFS DX VR. Trouble is, it's just not up to the job. I'd like to zoom in that little bit more. Something up to 400mm maybe?

What lens should I be looking at? Budget is around £500. Gotta spend some of my Christmas money :)
 
Guess it depends on what type of sports you are following, but I do a lot of motor sports and horse events and I find 200mm to be fine. But if you decide to go for longer focal lengths, then you will need good light as your shutter speeds will fall unless you spend mega amounts of money.

Although I use the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR lens, I also have a Sigma 70-210 f2.8 which I use in foul weather, but still produces good images.
 
Mainly football, but I did try it out at the Belgian Grand Prix earlier this year, and the results were, well pants!
 
I have the 70-300 VR which I use for drag racing and its great but sometimes I need something longer.

What about a secondhand Sigma 150-500mm ? Should fit your budget

If you want action shots, you want fast shutter speed.


I would look at something like a 70-200mm f/2.8 will give you faster shutter speed than your current lens. You lose a little on reach, but a 1.4x teleconverter will get you a 280mm f/4 lens.

I picked up the sigma 70-200mm and a 50-500mm and love both, but for sport you will need good shutter speeds.
 
Think that might be slightly above budget brand new. I'd prefer new, but looks like I'd have to consider 2nd hand. Need a few more posts before I can browse the classifieds :(

Have a look on eBay, you will need the sigma HSM model so that it auto focuses
