I have been printing some of my images up and noticed the b&w images had a blueish tint to them, so I took the memory card with the same images to asda in store photo shop and max spielman, the two store prints were more what I could see on the screen the printer prints are appalling compared to the store prints.

Is it not worth while trying to print your own images ?

either you calibration is off or your printer can't do neutral B&W prints.
 
well the machine in Tesco/ASDA/Boots costs more than a good Audi/Merc - and might even be operated and maintained by someone with some training - so in comparison they should be OK...!
 
Those machines in Asda and the like use a closed loop calibration system. In other words they print a test target, it is then read on a densitometer and the data feed back into the software. Any deviations from the aims are then automatically corrected. hence a neutral result.

However it is possible to get good neutrals with good quality inkjet printers. Some use a colour control device which enables you to make small adjustments to the way the printer produces colour. On most Epson printers this is under the Advanced tab in the printer driver. The best way is to have a fully profiles system, which does initially take a little effort, but is worth it in the end
 
The Fuji and Noritsu prints are balanced every morning - however with a B&W print you'll sometimes get a slight green tinge depending on the light used to illuminate the print... due to metamerism...

Hi Mate

The printer is a Epson SX415, the ink is a compatible version, paper is kodak gloss paper.
 
Julian take out the black cart, and either get a cotton bud or a bit of tissue and soak a drop of ink into the end of it.

Now stick it in a clear glass off water, what colour does the ink look when it mixes in the water.

My betting is blue.

get your lad to try it and see :D

Just done it

the mix was definitely black rather than blue.
