Not sure how many of you have come across the newish film and camera outlet Not-Quite-North, I’ve had a little skip through their website and certainly from first experience it’s prices appear to be at a “how much can we get away with” basis.

This caught my eye

At first I thought £1600 for a Ross Ensign Autorange 820, that’s a bit steep and then I read in the description that the door latch is missing! Surely £1600 is taking the p**s ?

There are two options with such people...
  1. Ignore them (the safe option)
  2. Show them up (as you have done here)

You can (obviously) choose not to buy but £4 for 120 C41 processing seems very reasonable and £12 for the same with high res TIF scans certainly is competitive.
Good point, tbf I hadn't got any further than their camera stock.

They are a great ,down to earth bunch of people at Not Quite North. I use them for dev and scanning roughly once a fortnight and they process with care and efficiency. Competitive prices for dev and scanning too. Recommend their services 100%

We get suspicious when a brand new member pops up to support and recommend a company that appears to be new: are you in any way connected other than as a customer Sally @saw

Hello there. No I’m not, just a customer. Didn’t expect my review to get such a negative response. It was an honest review for a great little shop.

That's all very well @saw Sally, but you seem to have only come to this website to publish that review and say nice things about the shop. I've taken a look, and they seem to be trying to replicate what Analogue Wonderland are doing, but the film camera stock seems a bit ropey and overpriced, the film seems mostly out of stock but otherwise ok priced. It sounds like their lab is good and attractively priced, but that's all. I've absolutely no problem with a business trying to establish itself in this field and good luck to them. However I'd repeat that a review etc from someone who has had no other interaction on TP is not going to mean much. If not backdoor advertising, it's a review with nothing to back it up in terms of being from a person who is known to be an enthusiastic photographer.

I can understand that reviews from new members can sometimes raise questions, and I can see why you might want to be cautious about backdoor advertising. I just want to reassure you that I don’t work for the shop and have no connection to it. I was simply a happy customer and wanted to share a positive experience.

I joined Talk Photography because I am genuinely interested in photography and film, and I hope to take part in other discussions here as I get to know the community better. I appreciate the work the admin team does to keep the forum fair and transparent, but I must admit that as a new member, the tone of the replies has left me feeling a little unwelcome.

I think your persistence over a period of time now does indeed support your comments. Please understand that we have seen quite a few instances of people joining TP to either say great things about a company/website or blatantly advertising one, but to be fair they usually disappear pretty quickly when called out for it. As you've not just gone away, you have demonstrated genuineness I feel.
So, having said all of the above, welcome to the site and I'm sure you should find plenty of interest. As you are interested in film in particular, please immerse yourself in the Film & Conventional section. There is a wealth of knowledge and experience there to tap into. Plus don't be afraid to share images and ask dumb questions - we all do from time to time and I speak as a particularly mediocre but enthusiastic amateur photographer!

Thank you for the info. I’m still trying to work it all out. How to share, how to make an album. When I tried to upload a few images earlier it gave me a notification that the files were too large, so I’ve got some working out to do.

Hello and welcome. I had that too when I first started on here. I now use https://picresize.com/ and click the final size of: "Fit to screen: 1024 resolution" and it gives a file size of under 200kb which is then small enough to upload on here.

Sample image of the 1st thing I did on my new 3d printer this weekend. Original image size 3.4mb, this image 99kb

For ease I do this on my phone but it will work on a PC. Please note this online converter has some pop up adverts but there are lots of others available. There are plenty of other options in the topic given above.

Looking forward to seeing some of your film photos.

I use ''Easy Thumbnails'' free - very easy and no adverts

and NO; I don't work for them either....;)

I either resize from C1Pro or from Apple Photos, or else open the image in Preview and resize from there. I'd assume that other flavours of image viewers would do this also.

In most cases resizing to 1024 on the longest size is sufficient. Sometimes it results in an image over 500K which then needs a small amount of head scratching each time!

I usually do a re-export in Lightroom, setting the max file size parameter and the px longest value 1024.

Or easier still, after uploading the full size image to Flickr, I then use it to export a bbcode with a suitable setting of 1024.

Oh that’s really helpful. That sounds easy and the pic is good enough quality too. Thank you

Ok I’ve exported from Lightroom at 1024 longest side and they’re still too big. I’ll try another way…

Set to 1000 long edge and adjust the quality slider to 95-98% that should get it just under 500kb or set limit file size at export, that'll allow you to keep size.

Yes, the quality slider is the key to shrinking the files. I very rarely have a problem with file size at 1024 pixels (BTW for my screen 800 pixels high is better for portrait, or I'm scrolling up and down, but that's OT!).

I’ve worked it out! Had to export them as really small files though (500 on longest side) so the quality could be terrible …

Set the size to 1024 on the long side and the maximum file size to 500kb.The quality slider should be greyed out because the software will adjust quality as needed, but image quality should remain high with a 500kb limit on such a small picture. :)
