Hello all just looking for some general trip advice

I've been over to NI for the NW200 a couple times now but before I was big in to photography! Rode over on my bike and had an amazing time watching the racing and rode around some amazing places this year I'm flying over hitting a car and will have more time with my full kit and will photograph the NW200 but also want to Landscape / Sunset opportunities too

I'll be saying near Derry for the first 3 nights and the next 3 will be somewhere further South

Anyone got any places they love?
I love scenic drives so mountain passes would be great

Thanks

Hi Ben. Right round the north coast from Derry clockwise right as far as Larne is a great drive and has loads of great photo ops. The north coast is also ideal for both sunrise and sunset shots. Where are you staying further south? The Mourne Mountains are another great area, I spend a lot of time up there hiking. Also County Donegal is super for wild rugged landscapes and views west to the Atlantic. I will add a few links to local photographers websites that might give you a few ideas. If there is anything I can do to help just shout. Phil.

Just wanted to say a quick thank you for the links and the advice so far.......... Ill have a proper look through those links over the next few days

Basically nothing planned as of yet I know ill be staying just out side Derry Thursday Friday Saturday, with racing Thursday Night and Saturday its about sport those days maybe the Giants causeway and the Bridge Thursday morning that sun set as well Friday I want to take my better half round the N15 /N56 route heading for Donegal then up to Dungloe and back to Letterkenny which I rode 2 years ago on Bike and I was blown away, id also like to drive in or round the Glenveagh National Park, So if you know of any good locations not far from this route for now oh I really like the look of this abandoned boat and church :)

Sunday we will pack and leave Derry and possibly head for somewhere like Ballina, Castlebar, West Port but as I say nothing planned yet as I don't know anything about that part of Ireland I had planned on flying from Newcastle to Belfast then back home from Dublin but that might change as I may just spend more time around Donegal

I hope you don't mind but I may be in touch quite a few times before I set off

p.s. I would like to make this trip a one to remember as I had planned just coming for the NW 200 but I had to call it off due to getting engaged but we won a holiday voucher so my trip is back on

Thanks again

No bother. There is some Donegal shots in those links and in my own Flickr too. Donegal is great, I have been up there for a couple of weekends over this last couple of years staying in Lough Eske estate once and the Beach Hotel, Downings once. I used to do a lot of driving down through the west of ireland but dont know many photo ops unfortunately, sorry. Just to say it is a fair drive from the west to Dublin, 3 hours approx depending on where you are setting off from.

lough eske and the bluestack mountains just outside donegal town are awesome.

I wouldn't get too excited about taking photos at the NW200, although a haven't taken photos in the last 4 yrs at it I hear it's went health and safety mad, a bit like all of the road racing over here it seems :(

In regards to landscape stuff, you couldn't be in a better location. You have Mussenden Temple which is quite a popular place for photos. It's closer to Derry than the Causeway would be.

In regards to the Causeway Coast, from Bushmills to Larne you could stop every couple of miles and probably get a decent photo.

I've taken a load myself since the start of the year across the country, if you want to try any of the locations let me know and I can let you know where they are. Good thing about this country is that wherever you want to go wouldn't be more than an hour and a half drive.

When you're in the South, Glenveigh is a stunning setup. Slieve League cliffs in Donegal are worth a visit as well as the Cliffs of Moher further on down the West Coast.

PS. Enjoy yourself and don't forget, a hire car park is the fastest car in the world

Thought id pick this up again as ill be going in just over 2 weeks so thought id best start palnning properly! My origional plans have changed slightlky but will still fit in photography time if it kills me! Basically its down to 4 days now Thursday arrive 9am, head up the coastal route from Larne to Port Rush (Get there in time for the evening racing starting) Friday early start as i want to visit the Dunlop memorial again then a nice pint in the Dunlops pub then along to see the meet and greet in Colerain, i then plan to head over to Buncrana and up to Malin head looking for some nice spots then back to Port Stewart for the fireworks on Friday evening, Up early Saturday (Raaaaceday) try my hand at bikes and watch the races, then possibly catch sun set from Port Stewart or Mussenden Temple, Up early sunday to head down to Donegal take in the west route (taking in hopefully Slieve League cliffs and Glenveigh) then jsut anything else that catches my eye then back down to Letterkenny and back home for a quick sleep then up early for the flight home :(

I hd to cut the trip short as weve got wedding viewings booked in for that week but on the plus side i get a week in the Lake district so my photography will continue :)

Thanks agina for your help, Based on my new plans do you have anything to add?

Ill take a look at your website hopefully tonight, Based on my new plans do you have anything to add?

and maybe in touch over the next few days with questions.......

I realise its a lot to fit in but i want to make my fiances trip to Ireland perfect! She loves coming out with me while im taking photos as she sees things she would never normally see!

It's a shame you couldn't change your route. There's a company (Retroventures) in Adare that hires classic cars and bikes. We hired a TR6 for the week and drove round the three south western peninsulas, up the wild atlantic way road to Galway and the Cliffs of Mohair and back again. It was the best holiday we have ever had, we did have great weather and had the roof down for most of the week :)
