I all, after struggling to explain to a few Polish guys at work today that in the North, what the South would call a swede, is called a Turnip, and vica versa.

I was wondering if anybody knew the reason for this?

Julian.

At risk of sounding stupid, I never knew they were the same thing...

They're not the same thing. The small, white vegetable I would call a Turnip, as I'm from the South, grew up here. But my Mums side of the family are from Cumbria, and would call this same vegetable a Swede. The large, yellow / orange coloured vegetable I would call a Swede, they call a Turnip.

Rutabaga!

(Swedish turnip)

that's what I would say too

I think THIS should clear it up.

Actually suede mashed with carrot is lovely and gives suede a purpose!!!

Mashed swede with butter and pepper, simply delicious :)

What north south divide?!?!?!!!!... (I'm in the middle somewhere) ;-P

Nothing like a good old Mangle-Wurzel either

I think suede would be incredible hard to mash given it's leathery texture. :D

I was thinking of the tragic end to the career of a popular beat combo, M'Lud.

Either I am missing the whole point or turnips are roundish, green and white, and swedes are roundish (but kind of flatter) and more orangy / red.

Both are nasty and evil......

Neeps.. ..

Swedes or Turnips makes no difference, they're both highly poisonous to Humans.

Without neeps what would I do with my Haggis?

I'm from County Durham and there large orange coloured one was a swede and the smaller white one was a turnip.

Seems the same down in London. Recently I went to buy the veg for a Burn's night supper and the large orange one was labelled "Swede"

They are just a really great veg.

Dave

large orangey coloured one, swede, smallish white one, turnip.

both should be greated with the same response "no thanks"

thats a lie, cant beat a bit o neeps n tatties"

Both are delicious when prepared properly and enough butter has been mashed into them. Can cause some wind though - but not as much as Jerusalem artichokes which blew the cat off the bed a couple of nights ago - agai, plenty of butter in the mash!
