Yes
I have a bike I bought from Halfords at the team valley store and its due for its annual service which I paid for at the time I bought the bike.

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for any particular halfords to use (or avoid) for my bike service. I know some on here might hate halfords etc but it was bought from there so the service is there and nothing I can do about that so I just wanted to pick the best store from peoples experience as I suspect like most places there will be some better than others

Thank you :)

I suppose the obvious choice would be where you bought the bike from - presuming they set it up for you well and you had no issues with them re the purchase / sales / advice etc.
If everything was okay, then I'd go back there ...

Yeah good idea and I have no problem with them but its a fair distance from me (only branch with the bike in when I bought it) but if it was the best choice I would go there again

Might be worth taking the bike to a local, highly recommended bike shop and writing off the cost of the service already paid for. A poor service could be worse than none at all. But it will depend on the person doing it and your ability to know how well the work had been done.

A couple of bike shops here will do a basic check up for about £25.
But as above, if you know what you are doing, it's easy enough. Lots of videos on YouTube will show you the basics.

Oh I can do it myself and have done for years. I have stripped many bikes down including wheel hubs and dismantled rear cassettes (before they sold them as one complete part) but this was offered when I bought the bike so thought why not.

The free service is worth every penny it cost. Do it yourself and save the time and cost of taking it to a place that'll do half of what you will, half as well as you can.

At this level what are they going to do......?

  • Pump the inner tubes,
  • Check the tyres are not too worn or cut or perished; if so replace them
  • Oil the chain or replace it if it is stretched or corroded,
  • Take up any slack in the brakes/gear cables
  • Change the brake blocks or discs if necessary or reset
  • Check the wheels run true or re-tension the spokes
  • Check all the nuts and bolts are tight
  • Oil or grease as appropriate, the moving bits/hubs/pedals/chain/gears etc
  • Check there is no extra play in the headset / pedal / wheels / other bearings or replace
  • Replace any worn bar tape or grips
  • Replace any obviously worn or damaged parts
  • Reset any hydraulic braking systems
  • Clean, re-set and re-lubricate any gears as required
  • Give it a polish
Job done.

If you know what you are doing......why bother taking it in?......save the journey.

Halfords....cant see there being much difference between stores, they will all have the same procedure manual and training.

A proper bike shop might be different.....some have been around for longer than others for a reason.
