Hiya! :) I'm going on holiday in a weeks time, and am worried about where (and how) I should pack my digital camera. It's a Canon Powershot A80, and I have terrible visions of it going through the airport scanner and having the memory cards wiped! I was wondering whether anyone could advise me. I know its probably a really simple question, but I'm new to the whole photography thing. :):help:

It (they) won't get wiped..... film stands a chance of being fogged, but it's very rare these days.

......knowing airports these days if you put it in "Hold" baggage is more likely to get swiped! Carry it with you if you can, as hand luggage.

Welcome... BTW.

They'll be fine. My A20 and subsequently A95 went through airport scanners to the States ok, and now to Cyprus twice a year every year without issue.

I would try and take any valuable equipment as hand luggage, just in case!

Common sense and a bit of research if needs be.

Airport scanners use xrays, xrays have no effect on magnetically stored or electrically stored data. Send your camera through the machine as often as you like!

Back in film days there were many apocryphal tales about film and xray scanners but I don't remember ever seeing an example of film having actually been damaged by an airport scanner.

I have taken my gear through airports many times and suffered no ill effects whatsoever ... ... apart from the occasional 'detailed' search of my equipment ... :suspect:

But do take heed of the advice above and carry it in your hand bag (gage) ... :D

:p
