The other half has a 40D and she's found that, although it works well on Canon batteries, it seems less reliable on 3rd party batteries - the ones she has are from 7dayshop and Jessops.

Before spending £50 on Canon batteries, has anyone else experienced this problem?

Thanks

Paul

I have 1 canon battery and 3 non-canon. The others seem to last longer if anything. 7dayshop ones.

I have a 3rd party battery for my 40D although it doesn't get a great deal of use I haven't noticed any problems 99.9% sure I bought it from wbessada

Thanks all. These batteries were fine in 10D/20D/5D but seem temperamental in 40D (camera shuts down after a dozen or so shots sometimes)

what about in the battery packs ?

I bought two 1800mAh batts 2 years ago from Sterlingtek Clicky Here for my 300D, I now use them on my 40D and they last for ages, spent all day at a race meeting recently and the battery still had'nt run out after 100's of shots, it was quite cold day too. I see Sterlingtek has 2000mAh batts a 2pack for 12 quid, 4.50 delivery...still a bargain and better & cheaper than canons batts

I got mine for £7.99 and they seem very good, I'v got 4, I only run 2 ***, in 1 camera, and 2 gens in the other, all in speed grips

My 7day ones have been fine in my 40D, not sure whether using 2 at a time in the grip makes any difference though.

frank, those stirlingtek batteries are £12 each, not for the pair.

"ST52 TWO Canon BP-511a Equivalent" USD $23.98 which equates to todays current exchange rate £12.19 GBP not incl delivery. The Ad definitely says 2 for $23.98 unless I'm not seeing 23 dollars each.

I've got 2 Canon ones but the spare I bought in the US very cheap due to the exchange rate. I'd consider either getting the grip battery pack or maybe try a 3rd party one should I need a third. I figured it was better to have 2 known quantities rather than one that might be less good. Bet they're all made in the same Chinese factory however.

we have a 30 and a 5. both use original and aftermarket.
the aftermarket ones we use( ebay ta) are actualy higher capacity than the originals and actualy last better than canons.
canon wont manufacture their own batteries. they,ll be from an outside supplier anyway.

Thanks for the tips. It's a weird one as they have worked fine (better) in all other cameras. Don't really understand it. Sounds like a unique problem to us though.

I have 2 x Canon and 2 x non-Canon. The non-Canon dont work at all in my 400D but work a treat in the bg-e3 so I'm chuffed :)

Maybe if you were a happybadger they might work better ? :woot:

The good thing i like about to 40D is that it takes the same batteries and charger as my current Powershot Pro 1. That helps !

Are you using "Live View" ? I ask as this could get through the batteries much quicker.

Just a thought....

Steve

They aren't going flat - they still work in the 20D, they just cause the 40D to shut down...

I wouldn't know how to turn live view on...

I bought two aftermarket batteries for my 300d 3-4 years ago as they were 150% the capacity and 20% of the cost.

They are still going strong in my 40D :D

Grumpy, what make are the batteries you're having the problems with. I only ask because there is apparently a known problem with some of the 511 type batteries manufactured by Hahnel when used in the 40D.

I'd have to be honest and say that I've very occasionally had problems with both my Canon bodies locking up - and it doesn't seem to reflect which batteries I'm using at all. The D30 does it on an occasional basis, and did even when I was using Canon batteries all the time. The 30D chose a particularly tight first-turn battle at the speedway the other week to lock completely, demanding a hasty "switch-off-flip-out-memory-card-remove-batteries then put it all back together again" manoeuvre in the approximately 15 seconds before the riders got onto their next lap! :bang: That was using one Canon, and one compatible battery in the grip.

Hi, Witch, my 40d is on its 2nd trip back to Canon at Elstree as it locks up in the way you mention, but only occasionally and with any one of 3 batteries, both OEM and 7 day, and also with the grip.
So we'll see...

didnt CT have some issues with his 40d draining batteries ?? Have you updated the firmware on it Paul ? Seem to think there were some issues with them and a firmware update was released ? (i may be imagining things again though lol)

If this is the same problem I occasionally get Ian (and it sounds like it is) then the batteries aren't draining out of power - the camera just sort of freezes, locks up. The settings are still displayed on the top LCD, you just can't make anything whatsoever work. The only "Fix" is to switch off the camera, (at this point, in spite of the power apparently being cut, the display is still showing!) remove memory card & batteries, wait for the screen to clear before replacing everything and turning back on. Mine has never jammed during a shutter actuation, only in between, and once it fires back up again the batteries are fine - I've never noticed that they have suffered any significant loss of power as a result of the locking up.

Correct me if im wrong but there is another small circular battery that goes in the bottom of the camera. Perhaps thats why the camera stays on even if the big one has been removed.
